Hey All,

I blasted around Middle America for a few days on the Hyperstrada.

Beautiful ride... Went to:

Steamboat Springs, CO then
Walden, CO then
Lander, WY then
Wind River Nat'l Forest (camped) then
South Pass City, WY then
Jackson, WY (hotel) then
Jenny Lake, Grand Teton Nat'l Forest (camped) then
Blasted through Yellowstone (too many fat tourists in RVs) then
Cooke City, MT then
Clark's Canyon, Shoshone Nat'l Forest (camped) then
Blasted through the Big Horn Mountains (great riding - few cars) then
Thunder Basin Nat'l Grassland, WY (camped) then
Newcastle, WY then
Custer, SD then
Black Hills Nat'l Forest, SD (Camped)
Spent a day and a half riding all around the Black Hills (hands down the most fun roads to ride I have experienced in 30,000 miles of mostly mountain riding) then
Blasted through the Nebraska Panhandle and Easter CO back to Denver.

I met some cool folks along the way including a German fellow who flew his KTM over from the Deutschland to tour across the US and down to South America and a fellow from GA who had ridden 20,000 miles across the US this year on an old school Kawasaki Concourse with 300,000 miles on it. Badass.

Man, this sounds pretty awesome. Looks like you killed a few bugs along the way.

I've thought about doing some longer trips like this before and was wondering:

- About how much do you budget?
- How much planning to do you do, or do you kind of wing it as you go?
- Do you camp at sites (like KOA) or just find a nice spot?
- Tips? Haha.

Cool pics and looks/sounds like a great trip. Here's a question, how do you get more than 1 picture up at a time? Maybe it is because I am using an iPad or am I missing something? Cheers.

It was fun. No real planning. I had Grand Teton and Black Hills in mind whne I left but all I really did was point the bike NorthWest and rode.

Personal preference, but I think KOA campgrounds are the worst... full of idiots in RVs with their generators running all night. Even the "tents only" campground at Jenny Lake wasn't my style. $24 a night to be surrounded by people? No thanks.

I camped in national forest most of the time. There is nothing quite like being totally alone in the middle of nowhere, waking up and digging a hole to take a **** in. Beautiful scenery!

I didn't have a budget. I figure I spent about $20 a day on gas, $60 on food. I could easily have cut the food budget down.

Tips? Go the speed limit in small towns

Cops there are typically wanna-bes who write traffic citations all day.

I just uploaded them one at a time. There is an 8 picture limit per post. Other sites have a drag-and-drop feature where you can upload more than one at a time.

awesome pictures. great trip. i desperately want to do something similar. the problem i have is that it is two days of boring interstate to get to colorado from here. that's four days of my vacation burned on just droning along the freeway.

That's cool. Agreed about the KOA sentiment, it's got all the ****** things about living around people and all the uncomfortable ones about sleeping on the ground. I had forgotten about being able to camp in Nat'l parks!

My friend and I did a 5 day trip in Germany on a motorcycle, which was awesome (other than renting a naked bike for the unrestricted parts of Autobahn!). The toughest part was always finding a good place to sleep without breaking the bank. Tenting seems to be the way to go.

Food's one of the best parts of traveling around, definitely worth paying a bit extra for that.

Dunno - seems like you could have a sweet ride along the coast - drop into the Big Easy, jump to Austin, and enter New Mexico via El Paso. New Mexicao, AZ, Southern Utah - that's some beautiful stuff right there - and great camping. Colorado is nice, but apart from Idaho, I'd take the Southwest every time - kind of magic. But thirsty magic - bring water.

I've lived in Ohio, Arizona, California and Colorado. There is great riding everywhere (except the really flat states like KS, NE, etc.). I find interstates and most highways to the the most boring places. It's the shoulder-less two lane roads in un-populated areas that I find the most fun and beautiful. I'm sure the South is full of them.

The Black Hills are by far my favorite if you can avoid crowds and all the Harley riders (po-ta-to-po-ta-to-po-ta-to).

you got that right. i did atlanta to indy for moto gp by setting the google maps on 'avoid highways' and it was great. did the same thing two weeks ago for a trip from atlanta to norfolk for work. great riding through north carolina.

i'm actively working a western trip plan. limited by vacation time though. would like to make it a full two weeks to do it right, and that is tough.

You might want to try HERE maps. It can operate offline via gps and is very good. I recommended it to a guy who's on a 2 year RTW, and he found himself in a desert where the road had been washed away. He remembered HERE, and sure enough the road was on the map, if not on the ground, and he followed the guidance out to civilization. It's free and very good. Osmand is also a good offline service. I have both on my phone.

Good read! I'm still trying to decide if riding to Colorado Springs in the middle of October is a good idea or not. 800 miles from Phoenix but I'd break it up into two days. The ride from Durango up to Montrose and then over to the Springs looks awesome!

Ha, well in my opinion CO Springs is never a good ride. Better to bypass it and hit Denver... avoid all the Jesus kooks down there. We have better coffee & beer up here anyway. To the West of the Springs are some great routes though.

AZ.. Have you ridden 191 down from Globe to Morenci? Great ride... especially towards Morenci.

That is the way to do it, pick a direction and see how lost you can get on back roads on the way.
