folding tip foot controls

Hi All,

Many of you have commented on the poor quality of the stock shift and brake levers. The tips are not replaceable and drag easily. So I've contacted Hammerhead Designs about the ones they make for Ducatis. They feature folding tips in various colors and offsets for different sizes of boots. Knurled or rubber covered!

They specialize in dirt bike equipment, but offer them for older Hypers and Multis. They are willing to make parts for us, but have not seen one so I am helping out. After perusing the Ducati parts lists I've decided that the shift lever and arm should fit our 821s.

I've ordered the shifter parts, will report on how they fit. The brake lever needs a different rear arm as the 796 one has too much offset. But it is a separate part, bolts on the lever, and they just got a new 3D printer so they are willing to make it for us. I've volunteered to send pics and dimensions, even my stock lever if they need it.

This probably won't appease the track day junkies, but is a lot cheaper than a set of Ducabike rearsets. The shifter plus the arm that goes on the shaft were only $130 with free shipping in the US - less than the stock parts, I'll bet. I'll let you know how it goes.

I think I paid right in the neighborhood of $120-130 for new rear brake lever from my dealer, and that was probably with %10 discount.

I will buy both levers once you confirm they fit.

Well, there is a problem with the brake lever. There is a boss on the inner side that holds a bolt that actuates the brake light and adjusts the lever position. I've attached pics from each parts list for comparison.

I'm (a) not sure that their 796 lever has this, and (b) not sure how to deal with it. I'm discussing a couple of solutions with them; note that the arm that operates the brake rod is bolted onto the back of the lever at the pivot. This part (red in the pic above) will need modification anyway.

And I'm not sure that the flat pedal is an option for this lever. It's not shown as such on their website.

I'm expecting the shift lever by Saturday. Right now I'm about to ride down to my dealer to get the steering head rubber boot upgrade. We'll see what HDmoto has to say.

I'm interested, already had to replace the brake lever. Have come close to dragging the shift lever.

Maybe the adjustable footpegs on Ebay are an option. It rises the footpeg by 25 or 40 mm so the break and gear levers can be adjusted to a higher level.
This will give more clearance for about 55 dollars.......

update

Hi all, here is the latest:

I rode to NB Ducati on Thursday for my rubber bootie upgrade, and looked at a HYM 796 they had in service.

First, it turns out that the brake lever adjuster bolt only sets the position of the lever. It has nothing to do with the brake light switch.

Second, the 796 brake lever is pretty close to the 821 except for the rear arm. I am investigating having a new one made. I could just fab one up for myself, but HDmoto is not willing to do it as they have a stock of obsolete Ducati parts already. It's hard for a small company to keep up with the constant updates.

Finally, I got the shift lever and it is really nice. Came with an extra rubber cover, too. But it turned out to be about a cm too short - see pic. So I've ordered a +10mm tip. You do need a good pair of circlip pliers to change them, so if you order one you should adjust the tip length accordingly.

Will update again when I get the lever installed with the new tip. And personally I prefer the stock pegs for the nice wide platform and the legroom (which I need).

Quick update - got the new tip. It came with all new hardware, including two circlips. They are tiny and there's a good chance that one will take a leap across the shop...what foresight!

I like these guys. Will update when I get it on there, busy with work and watching the GP this weekend...go Dovi!

Okay, pix below. I also bought the matching short link that goes on the end of the shift shaft. The 'ear' on the shift lever is angled back a bit, so I lost a few threads of engagement on the adjuster; there are still plenty but I will loctite this once I'm happy with the setting.

There is a very thin o-ring on each side of the bushing, be careful that you don't pinch one when reassembling...

Measuring from the back of the tip to the back of the footpeg, I got 6-1/2 inches on the stock lever. That was a bit long; this is better. I wear a size 10 US boot, 44 EU. The wifey's SV measures 5-1/2", and I can handle that if not comfortably.

Next will be a brake pedal...that will be tougher. I will buy one to look at, maybe even try a simple mod I'm thinking of. But they don't have one that fits, and can't justify the costs of tooling up a few for us. Their main market is dirt/MX bikes; I got the impression that they are losing money on their BMW/Ducati stuff.

i have used this on my 1100 hypermotard. They are good!

How i wish they will make the bolt and nut fit for the new hypermotard soon.......

I would not hold my breath waiting for the brake pedal, but the shifter works just fine. Took the bike out yesterday after adjusting the lever down a half turn. I was wearing my track-spec Sidis, they are actually size 43. After the first few miles I never thought about the shifter again. Seems pretty good to me!

PS Hi Nate!

quick update

Have the brake pedal on order. Unfortunately it won't accommodate the platform-type tips, as the mounting is completely different. I went with rubber, at least it matches the other side. And it folds.

I intend to make a new rear arm. If the rest of the lever fits we should be in business. Will take a week or two. The guys at HDmoto seem quite happy for a chance to move these 'obsolete' parts!

bad news

The pedal arrived late yesterday, so I pulled the stock brake pedal to compare. No way will this thing fit. The 821 has the return spring wrapped around the pivot boss; apparently the 796 has this on the inboard side of the mounting bracket. Even if I got the 796 parts I don't think that there is a boss on the inboard side to keep the spring centered, or even room for the parts.

I'm leaning toward buying one of their platform tips and welding a mount for it to the stock pedal. My welder could do this, even make it stronger than stock. They mount with two bolts, from the top. A simple job, actually. Hammerhead's titanium tip would sure look good on there, and the size and shape should protect it from impacts. They make a rotating one, too. See them here:

If you mean the ones that HDmoto sells, they only have two versions - this one and another that is splined for a rotating shaft. Again, our market is too small for them to make new ones for every new model. They don't have their own machine shop, the levers are made out of state.

I've ordered a TI tip, complete with TI bolts. Thinking of adding the 'snake,' but I am not doing any serious offroading on this bike. And I am loathe to modify any part that came on my bike, so I am ordering a new lever to hack up.

BTW it was tough getting the lever back on, there is just no room and the spring makes it harder. I ended up removing the pin that hoids the pushrod, which allows you to find the invisible hole that the end of the spring fits into. Then I tightened the pivot bolt, and held the spring up and out of the way with a hook tool while I reinstalled the pin. Not much clearance for my big hands, but I got it done. Final tightening required two "wobble drive" extensions and a 5mm allen socket.

PPS - those o-rings turned out to be standard, not metric! 7/16" ID x 9/16" OD. Go figure.

Whoops! I had not seen this one. I'll bet it will fit right on, once I remove the old tip. It's for a Honda CRF450, and even pivots. I'll follow up on Monday.
