Givi DIY mounts

So I am preparing for a longer trip an thought I may do the sensible thing and get me some nice cases for the trip. Seeing that the mounting solutions were few I went back to the garage and fabbed some stuff.
This is version 1 :) ... the plate is pretty close to the original mounts and I've just mocked it up with some washers as rough spacers ... the Givi E22 just barely touches the OEM rear blinker ... don't think this is going to be a problem ... but I may just add some larger spacers similar to the OEM round knobs ...

Thoughts, comments, concerns, advice?

Only difference between 821 and 939 is that 939 has an oil cooler, different hand guards, larger muffler and Euro 4 engine. Other than that they're pretty much identical.

See here for someone who put the Givi mount on his 821:

I've also ordered the Givi rack for my own 821.

Please post some pics once you have yours mounted up ... Judging by all pics I've seen so far they've made the adapter plate stick out quite far from the original mounting points ( by my estimation about 40-50mm ) ... not sure why they did that seeing that the original bags are closer to the frame which one would think is a good thing from the perspective of drag. Also the bolt diameter remains the same but the spacers have increased the length 4-5 times. This presents a problem when loading the side cases ... Now that I think about it makes sense why they would state that its only for E22's which have a small load rating ... maybe I'm overthinking this ...:confused:

So after looking for the original mounts and finding that everyone is sold out I decided to move on with making my own mounts and they are now done and as far as I can tell they are working nice ... I still have to go purchase all matching hardware bolts, washers and some loctite and clean them up ... I am thinking I am going with a brushed aluminum or black paint finish on them ... for now I am going to try the brushed aluminum since there is already a lot of black in the back there ... :) Here are some quick pics and I will take some more once everything has been buttoned up :)

So after doing some more riding with the bags on and with and without load I have settled on this and the mounts are performing great. I have put loctite on all of the bolts and outside of the fact that they dont look like much ... as my patience and finishing skills leave much to be desired they are very functional. I wanted to do another rendition in solid aluminum but there is no point to that ... they would be much too heavy. Attached are some final pics ... :)

Looks cool. I've got a chunk of metal to make a rear rack for my hyper but havent had time to actually make it.

How much did your side mounts cost to make? Can members of hyperstrada.com commission you to make some? :)

Thats a loaded question :)

I only bought the SW-Motech hardware kit for the Monokey system, which costed me about $50 + shipping ... the rest costed me "nothing" since I already have a bunch of material, CNC, lathe, tools, bolts, etc ... :)

I mainly did it because I could not find any online store that would take the roughly $300+ to ship me the ready made stuff (top and sidecase mounts) from either Givi or SW-Motech ... no one had them in stock ...

So to answer your question I can certainly make a few more of these at about ~$100 + shipping for the plates and the custom aluminum spacers ... provided :

1) you don't mind the original color of the material (this batch is blue on one side white on the other ) ... easily sanded or painted to whatever you want ... I just hit them with a scotchbrite wheel on an angle grinder and thats it ..

and

2) you get the SW-Monokey hardware yourself (seems to be available all over the place).

SW-MOTECH sidecase adapter kit for Quick-Lock sideracks (GIVI Monokey/Kappa) | TwistedThrottle.com

As another poster hinted ... there is not much to these things and if I were to put an entire kit together with all the exact hardware, finishing, small loctite baggy, instructions etc ... I would probably be very close in price to what Givi and SW-Motech sell them for ... :(

So I guess what I'm saying is if anyone wants a complete mounting system for Monokey (top and side cases) for roughly half the price and a bit of elbow grease to finish these (finishing required only if you care for aesthetics and think that the RED on your strada doesn't go well with WHITE and BLUE :D hint hint) then PM me ...

So far the mounts are holding up great ... close to 1000 miles with full load on them ... highway at more than 100 mph no problems ... dirt roads , bumps etc no problems

The original top case mount has two metal tubes from the back of the mount to a couple screws on the rear subframe. I did something similar to yours, but I'm worried about durability without these "brackets"
