Heated Grips

I tried pressing the start button while riding today to turn on the heated grips and nothing happened. No panel indication of OFF/LOW/MED/HIGH. Do all Hypers come with heated grips? Did I need to do something other than just press the start button while the bike is on and over 2,000 RPMs?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

In Europe heated grips are sold as an accessory part, I don't know in US. But if you didn't request it, and, after pressing the button, nothing happen'...anyway ask you dealer.

Here in the US the heated grops are also an accesory, were the grips installed by the dealer or did you install them? When the grips are installed the bike's computer need to be programmed (by the dealer) to recognize the grips or else they wont work.

Right on, you can put the grips on, but the dealer must activate them with the computer. HyperStrada is ready, the Motard is not, I didn't ask about the SP.

I was going to get the heated grips from my dealer when I picked up the bike but they had not come in. So I will have to wait. I will probably pick them up when I go back in for the 600 mile service.

Can I have the dealer just activate that option even though I don't have grips? I may order later and don't want to drive 90 miles just for him to click a setting in the diagnostics.

I asked the same question at my dealer but said the ECU need to recognize that the grips were plugged in before they could be activated.

I wonder why the activation step? I'm sure they don't expect you to deactivate it when winter's over, assuming heated grips come off for summer.

Maybe just blanket software for entire Hyper line?

My bike should arrive early June. Hope I don't have trouble starting it...and, I'm glad that I do not need heated grips. Hope you cold weather riders find the solution to the hand grip dilemma....I always thought you just get in your car when it gets cold out!

Question. I have a set of heated grips that I am going to install and then have the dealer activate.

I am just wondering if there is any issues installing them and then riding the bike before activation? Does the TPS need to be reset when the new grips are installed ? Any other gotchas here I am not thinking about?

I also notice that the throttle return spring in the new grips is much heavier that with the stock throttle tune. At lease it feels that way off the bike. I love the stock light throttle. Is there a way to reduce the return spring tension on the new heated grips?

You can install the heated grips and ride it without activation. On my hypermotard I installed them and rode to the dealership 40 miles away for activation.

I have no idea if you can change spring tension.

Thanks so very much :D

Took it to the dealer and they activated the grips. These are even hotter than any BMW I have ever owned. Super warm hands. :D

Had my 1K service done yesterday on my HS 2014 and I bought the heated grips and want to install them all by myself. The dealer was able to activate the option/menu even if the heated grips where not installed yet. Now when I press the start button to acces to the menu without the grips installed the check engine light blinks once, maybe it detects that there's an error of no current draw from the missing heated grips...

Will see how it react when the grips will be installed!

If you enabled them and didn't install then you are just creating a couple of short circuits in the system. I wouldn't recommend enabling them before installing, but it might work. Error codes in the meantime would make sense.

Now I had time to install them and work properly (for that price!!!). In facts, a male electrical connector is in place (with leads and a sealed shrink tube, the leads are not in contact and no resistor) to avoid the female connector to oxydize or get dirty if the heated grip are not used. So the activation of the grips in the menu without have them would not damage anything.

Yeah they wanted like another $300 to install mine. I did my own install too. The heated grips are my favorite feature of the bike, I've ridden in 29* F weather and it was pretty f'n cold but it wouldn't have been able to happen without those things.
