Hyperstrada - a good choice for me ?

Hi guys !

I'm new to the forum, so here goes a brief introduction:
I live in France, and got my licence 1 year ago. After trying out a few bikes, I settled on a Ducati Monster 696 ABS - well because I fell in love with the fun red Italian bike over the other options for a beginner :) (ER-6, XJ6, MT07 etc..).

I've clocked in 8,500km on the Ducati up to now, and the riding days for this year are not over yet :D I don't really want to loose to much money on the bike, and am thinking of changing in 6 months. I also know more about myself & what I want/need in a bike...

Let me explain:

1. I will basically be ridding from March to November, and don't own a car.
I will tent to use my bike every week end during that period - very often to go skydiving (my hobby) and also just to get around.

I currently use my Monster 696 in that way; and although I love the riding position (leaned forwards), but it actually gets quite tiring after 150/200km. It's not the best when you have to head home after a big week end skydiving..
Q: Even if I try the bike, I won't know how good it is after a looong ride - is the HS comfortable enough for such rides ?

2. I just love the fun engine & chassis on the 696 ! That why I picked it over the other bikes i could choose from: great cornering ability & fun, expressive engine. The HyperStrada looks like it has the fun factor to it as well !
Q: will it be as good as the 696 for cornering ? My aim is not to scratch my knee on every turn, but I want a bike which is fun in twisties (lots of those in France, and great mountain roads :) ).

I'm of course going to try the beast, but I'd like to hear your input on this :p
I basically want to keep the fun from my Ducati 696, great cornering capability, but also gain in comfort & "touring" possibilities (basically getting my gear from my home to the dropzone to jump out of planes :D ).

Cheers!

From what you described it sounds like the Hyperstrada is the perfect bike for you. Do consider if you want better suspension to go with the motard sp & get the touring stuff on that bike. Otherwise, the HS is your next bike!

Can't wait to try it out then ! :)

I do hope that the Panniers can take my Parachute though...volume looks ok (since they can take a Helmet) but the odd shape has got me doubting fitting in a parachute..

One think I cannot live with...is a top-case at the back ^^
I'll have to seek an alternative!

I definitely don't recommend this. The SP is not a touring bike.

Hi Wildchild
I also used to ride a Monster, but an older version, the forward leaning position does get a bit painful, although I never rode it further than about 200 kilos in one day. The Hyper is a different story and far more user friendly for longer rides, I have ridden mine 600 kilometres in a day with no real pains or aches. The seat is a bit "thin" but that does not tend to be too much of a problem. I must say however that my wife hates the bike, she complains that the pillion seat is too thin, too small and too close to me, but having got off a GS1200 (my previous bike) I guess she has high expectations.

Whilst the HS is a very versatile bike, I'm not sure I would use it for sky diving!

:D

Hi Wildchild....

Good to know ! When going skydiving the usual drive is at between 160 & 200km, so that quickly 400km over the week end - and the position ends up being quite tiring, especially when you've been beaten up bu 10/15 awesome skydives in two days :p

I also take my monster for longer rides, doing between 350/400km in one sitting, and there it get quite annoying after hitting the 300km mark.

The good thing is...I don't plan on taking anyone behind - so they won't be able to complain about the pillion seat
Will have to look for a nice big tail-bag which can contain my parachute, because it wouldn't fit in the panniers (and is too heavy - approx. 8.5kg) and I won't put on a top-case ^^

Make sure you get a decent tail bag, one without pull handles:D :DI am sure that a parachute deployment at 180kph in the horizontal would interesting. You would have the first Hyper with air brakes:D

Ahah indeed :D
180-to-0 in less than 1,4 seconds guaranteed :p

Man...that would hurt !
