Needs its first service

Sounds right. Dealer told me first service interval was 600mi

Why US units in UK?

Mine said the same thing, I have to bring it in for a 600 mi oil change as part of the 2 year warranty requirement.

What is involved with the first service? Just an oil change? And does anyone know if doing you're own oil will void the warranty?

there is nothing stopping you supplying your own oil for the dealer to do the service.
Oil sales contributes to one of the dealers biggest profit margins!!! ( I worked in the motor trade for over 25yrs)

Here in the UK block exemption was brought out a few years back, allowing you to take you car or bike to get serviced by none franchised garages, as long as they used genuine parts and where vat registered then they can carry out service work without you voiding any warranty.

The first service is an oil change and they may do a quick check over the bike. Best to call and ask your dealer. Mine said a dealer had to do all the required services to maintain the warranty and I think it says the same on the Ducati web site. Requirements may vary by regions. Yes I know by law that with automobiles you have a right to do your own oil changes and it won't void the warranty. I don't know if that applies to bikes too. Not sure if I want to test it over $150. I will do my own end of riding season oil changes before parked for the winter.

I agree for the cost of 1st service and a checkover by guys that will have been given the correct training, i'd let the Ducati dealer carry out the service, But nothing wrong with supplying your own oil, just make sure its the correct spec!!

To those who say your first service is simply an oil change, it simply is not true. Remember this is a brand new model. These bikes are being tested in large numbers for the first time ever, so you're doing yourself and everyone else some good by taking it to your dealer for the initial service. My suggestion is get to know the techs a little at your dealer, even if indirectly through the Service Manager or Service Writer. Ducati provides update training annually for their dealers' technicians, but typically not all the techs get to go because the dealer has to pay for accommodations and such and dealers have to be frugal. Ask the Service Manager which one(s) got to go this year, and although that tech may not be the one to work on your bike, that's the person who probably knows the most about it and may be able to answer your questions.

My problem with the dealer isn't the cost or anything, it's just that the nearest Ducati dealership is over an hour and a half away, also I want to go on a trip to deals gap friends are planning in June so in order for me to make this Maintence stop and go on this trip I'd have to ride 1000kms in 3 weeks of May And have everything go smoothly at the dealership probably taking time off work to drop it off and pick it up...

I've found that a six pack of beer (service techs favorite) mysteriously left next to a car (car of said service tech) and mentioning to someone of the beer being left (said service tech.) helps in the relationship and while it won't gaurantee perfect results it does let people know there extra effort is appreciated.

I have the distance problem also. 200 miles one way. I am a DIY guy, have L.T. Snyder's book, and shims for the 696. Done the valves.

I also agree with diaperstrada, Ducati needs the feed back on 1st service for these brand new bikes.

Agreed, let’s let the dealers do the first services and adjustments on the brand new bike with brand newly designed engines in them

I might buy oil/filter and do an early change. Just came across a recent Motor Cyclist article regarding break-in.
