Octane: what are you using?

For ethanol-blended fuel,
are you using regular, mid 89, or super unleaded?

What does the Testastretta like best?
Thanks for posting your experiences...

93 with stupid ethanol blend. I have a many ehtanol-free pumps around but they're all 89 and it's very expensive. I don't think ethanol is good in the long run but the alternative is too expensive and I don't want to take the chance of the ECU retarding timing to compensate for lower octane.

Why the hell is e-free more expensive? I've been told the tanker drivers pour the ethanol right into the storage tanks, which would explain why the sign says "maximum of 10% ethanol". But paying more for something that needs less work/refinement is BS.

In Europe E10 gets subventions from the Union. I still stick to Super Unleaded. 2 - 5 cents more per liter is peanuts for the feeling of the safe side.

just another example of how the USA will legislate itself into oblivion...take note, my Euro and Asian brethren.

95 octane for me, I don't know if our plastic tanks react with ethanol but if your going to burn it that day I wouldn't worry about it. If the bike sits for a week or more the ethanol tends to thicken some and that's not good for our small injectors and such. That's my understanding

90

In CA I was using 91 blend. Here in Alabama I can get no ethanol 90 Octane and have been using that with no noticeable issues.

I also use 98 Octane in all my bikes and the one time I was forced to use +ethanol fuel in my Monster, I had a problem with the motor stopping at idle and the issue persisted until a few tanks of 98 had been run through.

RON or MON?

If you are going to post a number, please specify if it's 'research' octane or an average of motor and research. In the US, pumps are labeled with the latter. Wiki 'octane rating' for more info.

The Hyper owner's manual specifies no less than 90 octane, as an average of motor (MON) and research (RON). Here in Cali we only get 91, back east they get another point. And now that our smog police have mandated single-hose pumps, the first half gallon is whatever the last guy bought - usually regular.:(

The ethanol thing is heating up, now there are many pumps in the US that offer E15 which is 15% ethanol. Using it voids your warranty...contact your US congressman/senator about this as they are considering expanding this nonsense right now.

Ethanol is absorbed by the nylon that they make tanks out of - I have a MuZ Skorpion where the tank expanded until it would not fit in the mounts. I found a new tank and now store the bike with the tank dry.

I'll bet that's why Ducati put plastic covers over the 821 tank - I talked to one fellow with a Monster who said he was on tank #3!

I'm trying to put a tank of E-free in every 5 or so fill-ups. The entire ethanol mandate supported by this administration is convoluted. The cost to benefit ratio is bad enough that the EPA is reducing the ethanol additive regulation.

I still just want someone to tell me why E-free costs more per gallon. Especially when a good friend of mine said he witnessed a tanker driver adding the ethanol to the storage tank. I don't know if this is how it's processed but what is undeniable is farmer's have clear cut vast amounts of farm land to raise corn because the gov't subsidizes the hell out of it - land they say could benefit us much more by raising other consumable crops.

good article

95 oct here in Spain. You only can choose between 95 and 98 at all pump stations.

They dont need to put the amount of ethanol because it's less than 5% and can´t damage any motor. If they use more than 5% it's special fuel

Otherwise here in Europe we have regulations about gas quality and there is no difference among Euro countrys and 95 and 98 oct fuel can´t have more than 5%

You seem to have answered your own question! The ethanol subsidies have raised the price and lowered the quality of food, contributed to soil loss, and filled the bank accounts of corporations like ADM and Cargill.

Guess I have to say it again... "98" octane in the EU is RON, roughly equivalent to our 91 or 92 average of RON and MON. Apples to apples.

but, usually when a product is subsidized, the price is lower. It's more like utilities or cable - you have to have it so competition doesn't really play a factor.

Somebody should make an additive that seperates or removes the ethanol. I'd keep a 55 gallon drum in my garage if that existed.

Actually, 5% or so of ethanol is not all that bad. For example, it replaced MTBE, a much more toxic substance that was polluting our ground water. Both provide more oxygen, which reduces tailpipe emissions. Also, it absorbs moisture - nicer to steel fuel tanks. But 15% is waaaay too much for our motorcycle FI systems.
