Pannier lock/ unlock/key removal. Another plea for help!

Tried mounting the Ducati panniers on my ‘16 939. Fitting onto the mounting brackets was achieved without much drama (as I’ve seen in several threads) but turning the key in the locked position not only made it impossible for key removal but did not prevent me from removing the pannier! I’m missing something obvious here. Ideas very welcome.,

They can be a hassle to get off the bike. I'll unlock, and then use a small allen key or something to push the latch open. Takes some jiggling.

Thanks for the tip. I can mount and remove the bags somewhat easily. Problem here is actually locking the bags once the key is turned 90• and then removing the key in that position. Even with the key turned in the lock position the bags can be pulled off easily. I’m the 2nd owner so who knows what was done previously.

Hey, I had a similar issue, what worked for me was pushing the panniers in place with the key out. It snap locks into place without the key, you only need the key to get the panniers out....

Yo Renny. You'll soon discover all the joy and pain of the HS OEM luggage...

I think you got it, but the key only removes in the "vertical" position. So my SOP is: Insert key, turn 90 to horizontal, pull the bag, turn key back to vertical and remove. I have to give them a solid and swift tug to break free from the mounts. And I use equal force to seat the bag once I have all the brackets lined up. **Always give a firm tug after reinstalling to ensure it's locked. There have been a few that took flight on the road.

Search for an older thread on the pannier locking mechanism. The tumbler can be a bit finicky to R&R but lubing up the innards does wonders. At the very least, a little lithium grease on each of the bracket surfaces helps. And they'll fade to elephant skin gray pretty fast in the sun.

I think the lock lube is the next step. Currently the bags come off so easily, I can figuratively see them in my rear view mirrors bouncing down the freeway!

Here’s one that worked. A post from several years ago suggested disassembling the pannier locks, greasing them down, reassemble. Me thinking no wey, but gave it a shot using Chain Wax. Guess what? It works!
Now the bags snap in with a sharp whack, slide off when key is turned to release.
Fun fact: the key functions only as a release mechanism.

Sounds like you have locked and unlock mixed up. On mine, the key is only removable in the locked position. So if you can't remove the key, it's because it's unlocked. This would also explain why it is easy to remove the bags when you think they're locked.

You are correct! Issue solved. A little lube did it.
