Top Case on my Hyperstrada

Hey guys, just wanted to show you what i put together for a top case.
So far all i have into it is $145 for the Ducati Braces and spacers. A fairly small piece of aluminum, less then $20 in hardware, and the actual case is a pelican knock off for $40. This did take some pretty basic layout, and fabricating skills.
Bracket install was super easy, literally replace the for bolts with longer ones and the bracket

I had to get spacers under the existing 4 bolt holes as the brackets were about 5mm higher

My aluminum cut and drilled, 6 holes to accept the 6mm holes on the bike and 3 to accept 8mm fasteners holding the top case on.

Plate fastened to the bike, I may modify this later its still a little plain for my liking

and the finished product.

and the view of my driveway today, looks like I'm still not going to road test it soon.

I should add this is probably going to be version 1, nothing i do is ever really finished so feel free to add comments or suggestions.

Looks like a great value for money outcome. Dome headed cap screws in place of the straight sided ones in the photos would provide a smoother appearance to the rack. I got some real nice stainless ones from my local bolt shop that I have used on a couple of my other bikes.

nice work!! how did you mount the box onto the rack? is it no-tools quickly detachable or does it need hex keys to come off?

I just have 3 8mm cap screws holing the case to the rack. I've been thinking of different quick detach solutions

i'm a DIY enthusiast myself. if i can get hold of a box similar to yours, my quick-release (but expensive ) solution will be to install the touratech rapid trap system... and with that, i will also need the zega pro topcase rack for the multistrada which will also fit the hyper

gotta save some moolahs for this project

I had thought about buying the zega top case rack from touratech as well and just modifying it to fit the ducati braces, but at $571 for the box and $210 for the rack and still need the $145 Ducati braces. It was getting a little rich for something I still had to modify quite heavily

i agree, the whole touratech system is pricey. that's why i'm not considering their top box... i'll just get their quick-release system and slap it onto a pelican or something similar. plus, the empty box alone is on the heavy side. but still, even just the topcase rack and the rapid trap is a substantial investment in itself. anyway, i'm actually in it for the mod, just to keep busy when not riding on weekends

i hope you don't mind, not to hijack the thread or anything... i just thought i'd share something for others looking for a cheap luggage plate solution to consider.

when the bike was a few days old, i badly needed a rack to mount a decent tailbag. so before i found out the multistrada plate can fit the hyper, i designed my own using cardboard as a template then had a fabricator laser cut me the shape in 9mm plexiglass. also had him apply some black vinyl sticker to give it color. i then drilled holes for the mounting screws.

i since replaced it with the touratech aluminum plate, which i also mod'd to accept the givi tank lock system

Any chance you would sell the plexiglass mount? That is what I am looking for.
Please PM me

KMS, the plexiglass plate is yours for free, if you're willing to pay for shipping. i'll check the rates with the shipping companies here. but i suspect shipping will be much more expensive than what i actually paid for to have it made

overstrada, would really love to help out but i don't think i can squeeze in time between my day job, errands and my other weekend activities to have stuff made other than for personal necessity. sorry

Ok I understand thanks for your time :)

Quick Release

I just have 3 8mm cap screws holing the case to the rack. I've been thinking of different quick detach solutions

I've been inspired to waterjet cut 4.75mm aluminium into a similar top rack (also like the SW Motech) for my Hyper (Using a pelican case on top). Have you thought of any quick release options yet? I was thinking of a relatively simple bolt(s) with a hole at the end to fit a padlock through.

Thought I'd share that I saw an 1190 Adventure at Bike Week all kitted out for endless travel. Anyway, he had a headlight chip protector made of laser cut plexiglass, very similar to Monstard's 1st gen rear bracket. There were some rough edges and to me it looked like he did it himself or had a friend do it.

I'm starting to think I need to find a local shop with a laser cutter.

Nice looking part. I've seen plexi windshields crack fairly easily, although they are a lot thinner than 9mm. I'll bet that plexi mount weighs double what the touratech one does. I'd go for 1/4" ABS, a bit thicker than the 3/16" I used for mine. It's not pretty, but I only mount it when a carry a rear bag. Total cost was zero, and I drilled two sets of mounting holes so I can scoot it back for SWMBO's butt clearance. I am very sensitive about weight up high and rearward, can make the bike unstable. One result is that I have never felt any hint of headshake on my Strada, up to an honest buck-thirty.

My rear bag is old, a 'soft' RKA, and I pack anything I consider irreplaceable in a separate bag that I can carry if I leave the bike in a dodgy situation. Or in the tank bag. No locks required; no one would steal the empty bag.

PS here in the SW USA you can find specialty hardware at McFadden-Dale, the ultimate hardware store. I always feel like the kid in the candy store every time I walk in.

...
when i mailed the plexi plate over to a member, DHL weighed it and turned out 1 kilo. i don't know how much the touratech weighs but i don't think the plexi weighs any more

KTM has some really nice tail bags, smaller and more ergonomic. save for the price, KTM colors and logo, of course. i wish ducati made something similar. i plan on getting the RC8 rear bag for short day rides. have to think of a way to get rid of it's KTM identity. then i'll fabricate a new smaller plexi plate in 6mm just so i can install the bag's quick release features

Interesting fact/issue I learned when came upon a loaded KTM 1190 Adv: Right side pannier has to be smaller and extended out a good 6" to clear the exhaust. The bike was fitted with top of the line Givi aluminum boxes and the right was purposely half the size of the left. I hated it. The lack of symmetry gives me a headache.

I guess it's a more purposeful off-roader so the exhaust has to run tight and high, but glad this isn't an issue with Strada.

Speaking of stability Zippy, I am doing a charity ride from Sydney to Ayers Rock, just over 6000 kilometers. It's my first big ride and I will be camping along the way. Is there a maximum weight you would load up the rear with before it would become unstable? I am currently having a rear rack water jetted (similar to the alt) to carry a pelican 1500 case as you have done. So with the panniers, pelican and possible waterproof 30L duffle would you think that stability would be an issue? Will be on some open speed limits in the middle of Australia too.

Anyone have part numbers on the ducati brackets? Or has DYI one?
