Hello
Could anyone tell me how to decipher my VIN number ? I am especially interested in model (I have "low version" hyperstrada) and production year.
Is there an updated decoder on the web ?
The VIN is
ZDMB200AADB004798

Thanks

Here in the US we call that a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). It is standard for all road-legal vehicles sold today.

If you DL a copy of the service manual, it has the codes explained. Get one here: DUCATI HYPERSTRADA 2013 Repair Workshop Manual (html)

It's only $6.50, but still not quite complete. It's accuracy is also somewhat questionable - think "Lost In Translation." You will want it sooner or later! But here's the info for your bike:

DATA STAMPED ON THE FRAME
Europe/france/japan/australia version

1 Manufacturer: Ducati Motor Holding

2 type:
B2 = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (77kw): Europe, France, Japan, Australia
B3 = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (70kw): France
B3 = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (35kw): Europe, France
B3 = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (25kw): Europe, France

3 variant:
00 = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (77kw): Europe, France, Australia
00 = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (70kw): France
01 = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (77kw): Japan
01 = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (35 kw): Europe, France
02 = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (25 kw): Europe, France

4 version:
AA = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (77kw): Europe, France, Australia
AA = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (35 kw): Europe, France
aa = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (25 kw): Europe, France
FA = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (70kw): France
JA = hypermotard / hypermotard sp / hyperstrada (77kw): Japan
note: the 9th digit is actually a check digit that is generated by the rest of the code; it is used to make sure that there are no errors in transcribing the VIN.

5 year of production:
# = year of production

6 manufacturing facility
B = for all models note: this must mean Borgo Panigale, Thai built ones have a T here.

7 progressive serial no. from "000001"
identical for all models

The reason for asking:
I received my new strada this July (14)
The VIN is
ZDMB200AADB004798
One web decoder deciphering VIN's output this VIN as a 2013 manufactured bike.
Is this true ?
Is this normal to have a 2013 VIN on a new 2014 bike ?
Thanks again

Does your paperwork say it's a '13 or a '14? What about the frame sticker?

Most manufacturers switch to building the next model year's vehicles sometime in late summer or fall but I believe they change the code in the VIN at that time.

It looks like they use different codes regarding the model, etc. than here in the USA. Makes sense, actually. But my 2013 Hyperstrada also has a D in the "year of production" position. That's right after the check digit. Can't explain the diff, except that there were no changes for 2014 and the date that they introduce the "new" model year is fairly arbitrary. But seldom as late as January 1. The law says it has to be year of production on the VIN, not the model year.

Bottom line, what does the title say? That's what counts.

But my serial number is in the low 1000's, and the bike was purchased May 2013. They only sold less than 4000 of these things in more than a year?
