What engine RPMs

I apologize in advance for the possibly stupid question. When you are just cruising at a steady speed, what RPMs do you ride at? I find below 4K the engine seems to be straining and above 5K it wants a new gear. I'm relatively new to motorcycles, so any input would be appreciated.

I am always riding in "wants a new gear" which took me 1000mi to get used too.

yeah, that's about right. Drop your front sprocket by a tooth (or the rear by 3...but the you need a new chain) and the bike will be much happier. I put the 14 tooth on when I picked up the bike and haven't looked back.

The end result is a bike with much more usable power at low rpms.
