Windscreen extension

I went shopping around for an extension spoiler for the screen on my Hyper, as usual anything slightly out of the ordinary is hard to find in SA. So I opted for the removable "lock on" extender made for The Multistrada by Touratec.

Lock it on for long trips and touring, put it away when not needed.

Fits like a glove

Let us know the results. Thanks.

Adjusted and fitted it properly last night, I will report back once I have ridden the bike.
This thing is quite expensive at U$190-00 here, not sure what it would cost elsewhere but may be worthwhile for those long touring trips when a tad more wind (and insect protection) would be good:)

I'm also curious as to how this changes the wind blast you get on the highway at speeds (130 kph+). Let us know how tall you are too!

I like the versatility, and I want more wind protection on the highway (which I don't hit much anymore) but, it's pretty ugly. The clamp looks like it's definitely sturdy enough. It's just a big metal eyesore and I think I would be constantly looking at that blind spot.

I actually don't mind the look so long as the thing functions properly, the large metal bracket is hinged and supplied with a key to lock the thing onto the screen - It's typical German engineering.

I am 6 foot tall, 205 pounds, I have not ridden the bike with the extension fitted yet as I have been running around the country on business, I may get a chance this weekend.
Feedback to follow.

Hi PomGT,

Thank you for your comments. I alo just bought it in Japan($160-170) by your tips.
I was looking for larger screen than DP touring one.
It will take 3-5 weeks to receive it for shipping from Germany!

I am looking forward to hearing your high-way impression.

Thanks,

HiroTokyo

That's a pleasure, I hope it helps, I have not tried my bike with it fitted yet.
Going away this weekend for a weeks tour, will report back later.

I am working on a larger windscreen. Plan is to have it mount on the stock windscreen mount. Also will have spacers to push it forward if needed to make it even taller though less aerodynamic. A 3d CAD model is used in CFD analysis to optimize the shape and to check for forces on the stock windscreen mount. Material will be Lexan Polycarbonate.

I plan to make and sell these so please send me a note if your interested.

Image below show a flat cardboard mounted on the bike. Second image is stock windscreen on two different cardboard sizes.

It's a good shape and I seriously want a larger screen that really blocks the blast at 70+ mph.

Do you plan to do a good comparison with the factory touring screen? It's a tad larger than stocker but probably doesn't do much more.

My concern is 90+ mph on flat, open highways. Will the plastic windscreen mount handle cross winds? It might need handlbar mounts I'd prefer not to use.
This past weekend I rode St. Louis to Minneapolis and back through House on the Rock WI and the wind was rough. Of course back roads are preferred though there are times when we need to get somewhere quick on highways and strada windscreen is not the tool for that job. Think about touring bikes where typical windscreen is up to eye level and shoulder width.

I rode highways from big Bend Texas wind just as bad. Massive alien like wind farms both Texas and Minnesota and I experienced why.

Other windscreens can be drilled and adapted like BMW 1100 can make fit and I almost went that route only I want the triangle shape at bottom like stock hyper shield has.

Dude, concur on all your assumptions. If I'm on an open highway, I'm doing 80+ mph. There are some support arms that one member added but I'd like the option to quickly swap the smaller one out. That mount is pretty flexible and I did 1000's of miles between 80-90 mph with the touring screen. I think it will hold and I have a spare from touring purchase.

Just this weekend I was riding south from Annapolis, MD, on rural back hwy's. The wind was gusting to 30 at times and I still kept it above 80. That's my idea of touring and I want that extra bit of wind protection.

Finally, you are spot on about retaining that stock shape. There's been many different short and stock designs posted on here and the diamond shape just fits best. Especially if you go bigger.

Agree completely with you guys, the stock screen mounts/fairing brackets seem a little flimsy for a bigger screen, but it is also rubber mounted and seems to flex more than in actually does. This is precisely why I wanted a removable option, if it the mounts battle I will simply take the thing off and toss it in the pannier. We have some pretty dam flat open and straight highways here, where the wind can howl across the flats at ridiculous speeds, but I tend to prefer the long way round and avoid these roads, hence lower cruising speeds.

Ducati Touring screen

Hello together,

I use the bigger Ducati Touring-screen in combination with a selfmade bracket inspired by puig.

I´m 1,76m and with this screen its really relaxed driving with 160-180km/h (111mph).:D

I have the Touring screen but it doesn't keep enough off my shoulders and chest at the speeds I ride. Very fatiguing on longer rides.

I'm pretty sure the member that added brackets just got them off eBay. They attached to the bars. Some sport bike models use them.

Ok report back time. I did almost a 1000 miles in the last week. The windscreen extension helps with the buffeting on the helmet, but directs the wind around the screen and straight onto the shoulders, so it is still quite tiring to ride long distances.

We were travelling at speeds from 60mph upwards, and on the odd occasion reached 120mph, but I guess at that speed not much would make a difference anyway:D

There are no signs of any fatigue in the brackets on existing screen, despite the fact that the give in the existing brackets is quite significant, although I do reckon a lot of the give comes from the rubber mountings.

Lastly the extension showed absolutely no signs of wanting part ways with the bike, which can only be good:cool:

i have the puig screen, the wind protection is significant compared to the oem and it comes with a support bracket. i really believe the mount by itself, fastened to plastics in the headlight assembly by 4 small screws, is flimsy for larger screens. there is so much flex at highway speeds that fatigue might eventually cause those screws to pop off, imo

found THIS piece of accessory as an option to support a larger screen or stock screen with extention. it will require drilling through the screen to mount one end and clamping the other end to the handlebar... or for non-invasive mounting, i think velcro or double side tape at the screen end should be ok

Hi PomGP,

Thank you for your ride report.

Finally I bougth TOURATECH small wind screen spoiler extension because of long waiting time and cost. I also noticed that I do not need the lock in Japan.

I will tell you how it is effective after receiving it.

Thank you and ride safe!

Hey Hiro.
In my part of the world everything has to be locked, if they can carry it, they will steal it, it has to be seen to be believed:eek: - Good luck and thanks for the response;)
