10W40 oil in my 821 ok?

Dealer put 10W40 oil in my 821

I just had my oil changed from the dealer after getting the anti judder clutch update done in my 13 hyperstrada and noticed on the invoice they put 10w40 instead of 15w50 that the bike requires. So I called them the next day to argue and they said that 10w40 is better for the clutch. They said that they'll change it out if I want. I'm not worried about the clutch I'm more worried about the gears and other internals. Is 10w40 fine for the bike?

I run 10w40. If you look in the manual it says 10w40 is good for all temperatures. There are a lot more oil options in 10w40, its cheaper, and better during cold temps (not that you get very cold in Hawaii!).

Thanks for putting my mind at ease a little. The manual does say 10w40 is acceptable but would 15w50 better protect the gears?

In Hawaii's temps I'd probably use 15w-50. But honestly either are fine, don't beat yourself up over it.

OK, what I have read of comments from knowledgable writers is that Ducati designed their engines around the 100C viscosity of 40. Any thicker viscosity does nothing but rob horsepower because of the effort needed to splash everything through it.

One could make an argument that they don't care about horsepower, as the goal is ultimate metal wear surface protection. If that is the case, then I would guide you to the ASTM test results for the best in metal protection, while maintaining the appropriate operating temperature viscosity.

As for clutch operation, having a motorcycle oil with MA certification takes care of that.

10W40 oil in my 821 ok?
