Apologies if this has been brought up before, I did a little search and couldn't see.

Am I right in thinking that the 12v sockets on the Hyperstrada are an odd size, all of the 12v sockets i've got and use in the car are much bigger and the same size as the cigarette lighter, is there an adapter or specific fitment I need to look for?

It is a powerlet or BMW style socket.
 
Remember that those sockets are switched with the ignition, so they are useless for battery charging.
 
I have the batt charger adapter for the 12v and it does work on mine. You need to turn on the ignition, once turned on and charger is hooked up you can turn it off and the 12v will stay on along with the bikes display and it will charge without the key in.
