Hyperstrada/Hypermotard 821 Carmo "Christmas Tree Dash" Repair Experience

2013 HS with 26k miles. I am the original owner and do not think these recalls have been done to my bike, though it is dealer maintained.
The correct 848 (Eldor) coils are 380.1.014.4B, correct?
I have had no issues with the bike, it was my main ride through 2019, now is in the back of the garage.

Well...I am fortunate to join this club. :-( I have my electronics off to Carmo and the Eldor aprillia coils on order. I had the TSB canBUS filter installed, but I still go the delightful Christmas tree. Ducati won't cover it because I am the 2nd owner even though I had the recall done.

Now it is just the waiting game.....

Finaly an update to my 2013 HyperSrada Christmas Tree issue.
Recap, in 203-14 the bike suffered the Christmas Tree three times, each time Ducati fixed it for free as part of the warranty, the last time even after it was outside the official warranty. The fix was coils, ECU and Dash. The CANBUS filter was installed as a recall, and all went fine until October 2023 when it happened again. The bike was purchased new and always been serviced at the original dealer here in NJ USA.
The first diagnosis was a burned out CANBUS filter (the recall) but that was just the start, a long series of discussion with Ducati and the dealer finally resulted in a fixed bike which was picked up today mid-June 2024.
Ducati has paid for all the parts, I had to pay labor. They provided
• 51025101A Kit Protection Can Filter
• 38010145B two off Ignition Coils
• 21030195 two off Spark Plugs
• 581310 Battery
• 40610951F Instrument Panel
• 28642301C Engine Control Unit
The labor charge was for 6.7h at $175 per hour. Total including Tax $1,266.17
How do I feel? Wel $1200 is quite a lot of money, perhaps more than sending the original units for repair. But satisfaction Ducati stood by the bike and paid for the parts. Apparently, they did this because I was the original owner and had a full-service record. I fear that had this not been the case, they would have done nothing. I did get what they call updated coils and apparently some additional filters installed between the cold packs and Dash, not taken the bike apart so don’t know if this is true. I have posted pictures of the coils and ECU in case anybody has more information.
Now my dilemma, during the wait I purchased a used 2016 HyperStrada which has less than 5K miles. I love it. Now I have two bikes which one do I sell, I can get a good price for the 2016 low milage but worry that the 2013 will Christmas Tree again.
Hope my story helps and serves as a record. Anybody else had the Christmas Tree experience more than four times??

Thank you for rich information!

I'm looking for a Hypermotard/Strada 821 in Brazil and I would like to know if this is a problem from 2013 ~15 or does it also happen on Hypers 2016?

Hi, I'm in the same situation as you where I definitely need to replace the ECU and the ignition coils. I know for sure that, since this is a recognized issue by Ducati, the replacement of these two components can be done for free, just as it was for you. Could you tell me what the procedure is to request this intervention?

P.S. I was informed that this type of problem occurs in the 821 because there is no kind of 'protection' for the ECU. So, in the case of starting with, for example, a slightly weak battery, the voltage that the coils should discharge onto the spark plug ends up discharging directly onto the ECU, which, lacking any type of protection, ends up breaking. The few precautions you need to take are regarding the battery's condition, especially after a long period of the bike being stationary or when starting.

I didn't have this done so I cannot properly advise but I would say-
Gather plenty of written evidence from here and elsewhere from people who have had this problem, especially those who had the fix by Ducati long out of warranty.
Stress that it is a well known issue, that a recall was issued for the problem, but it is well known that it did not fix it.
Have a good read through-
also, there may be more mentions on there.

"in the case of starting with, for example, a slightly weak battery, the voltage that the coils should discharge onto the spark plug ends up discharging directly onto the ECU"

I'd not heard that. It is worth knowing though.

I've sent my bike to Desmo service 2 weeks ago. When I took it, the Engine Light came back.

I ride to home with half RPM, light on, since then the bike is off. I have tried to run it last week, the light still on, it runs a couple meters and engine dies.

Tomorrow will try again... no clues about what it could be...
