It appears that nobody posted about the 'dreaded' desmo service costing details for the 30,000 km yet. I just did mine a few days ago at Ducati Malaysia and here's what they replaced for my Hyperstrada 821.

1. Air Filter
2. Timing drive belt x 2
3. Head cover gasket x 2
4. Spark plug x 2
5. EO Motul 7100 10W-60
6. bearing x2
7. O-Ring 12.39x3.53 x8
8. Liquid gasket
9.tube gasket
10. M8 nut x 2
11. opening rocker arm shim 2.85
12. opening rocker arm shim 2.95 x3
13. opening rocker arm shim 3.00 x3
14. opening rocker arm shim 3.05
15. closing rocker shim 3.35 x3
16 closing rocker shim 3.40
17. closing rocker shim 3.55

total cost = USD649

The stalling issues seems to have gone after the desmo. Intermittent poor idling also went away since then which i suspected caused by the valve clearance. Popping while deceleration also greatly reduced .

That cost sounds about right, for all the stuff they did! Glad to hear that it went well.

My dealer (and I) prefer Motul 300V full synthetic, though. 10/40, per the manual. The wider the spread between the two numbers, the more Viscosity Index Improver additive is in each quart and less actual oil. 10/60 sounds extreme, but I do trust Motul's products.

We have a Mazda3 2.0L with 13:1 compression, which certainly works that little engine hard. It wants 0/20W...

I would imagine the heat can be quite extreme in Malaysia, thus the requirement for 60 weight oil. My dealer in SoCal also uses 300V 10W-40.

I ran Motul 300V 15w50 since new and recently switched to Mobil 1 10w40. Big difference. It feels smoother across the board. The clutch feels better. Shifting is smoother. Temps are a little higher and heat up quicker. I'll definitely be using it from now on.

I went with Amsoil 20w-50 because that's what their website called for and ordered a 5 quart jug. I think my shop may have used 10w-40, but can't recall for sure.

Honestly, I feel the clutch has been a bit more finicky. Tougher to find neutral at times. But, I changed the oil almost immediately after winter storage so frame of reference is foggy. I've stalled it out more times in the past month than I did the entire 2 years before, though.

I hope that's the motorcycle specific M1...if it's the plain stuff intended for cars, there are not enough anti-wear additives in there as they tend to ruin catalysts...

That explains it...I imagine VA gets rather chilly in the winter. I worked in Atlanta for two years and froze my a$$ off in the winter. The locals bragged about the "mild winters"...compared to Maine, maybe!

Living in a tropical country with just one season throughout the year seems like a heaven for riding enthusiasts. But it does get hotter from time to time as the temperature here ranging from 77 deg to 93 deg .:D;)

Having gone to a workshop regarding desmo valve adjustment - I will happily pay the $650 and say "thank you very much." Roughly translated: Better you than me.

Damn. Just got a quote from my current shop: "almost $1000". Methinks they won't be my shop come Desmo service time.

Does this service have to be done by a Ducati dealer or can a local bike shop do it?

Don't see why a competent mechanic can't take care of it.

A regular mechanic won't be able to reset the service counter.. For that you need a Ducati dealer.

To tell you the truth, most mechanics don't want anything to do with adjusting a Desmo Valve system.. Inside these motors is a pretty unique valve train system that not a lot of people know how to properly take the measurements and understand the results.

+1 - without the right tools also the best mechanics can not tension the belt right

hey guys just a quick question regarding the service intervals. Have you all been doing oil changes before 9,000 miles? Just wondering how its possible for them to give such a loooong interval....I feel like they tell you that so they can gouge you after parts wear down....

as they also say 1 inspection per year, engine oil only stays so long when you drive 9000 miles a year. in all other cases it gets changed at yearly inspection.

I just find it hard to believe that the oil should only be changed once. I change mine before I put it in for winter storage and after I take it out.

when it's changed before winter storage, why change it also after ? Thats imho too much.
that's overserviced :D
