30,000km desmo service

when it's changed before winter storage, why change it also after ? Thats imho too much.
that's overserviced :D

I've only had older pre-owned bikes in the past. I probably wont do that this time around but I do like to have pretty fresh oil going into storage. I don't really get a chance to fire her up during the winter time so I want to make sure that all the fluid is fresh and has stabilizer in it. Better safe than sorry.

I read some interesting stuff recently regarding oil changes on my VW TDI. Euro TDI oil change interval is 18K miles, whereas US is 10K. Apparently Americans just don't trust ze Germans...

Modern synthetics are pretty awesome. Still, she's my baby and I work the piss out of her every time I'm on her. I use the mid-cycle fluid change because my dealer said he does on his bikes and it satisfies some silly synapse in my brain that tells me she's in peak physical condition. My Strada also generally runs hotter than my car in stop and go, which is most of my riding.

It wouldn't be such a big deal if these bikes were easier to work on. I mean you gotta rip the whole damn thing apart just to get to the air filter. I actually don't mind waiting that long however I just know that I'm going to want to change the oil before I put it in for winter storage....I guess I have that complex too!

oil change before winter storage is ok and good. old oil in the motor over a longer standing period is not good because of the agressive combustion residues.
but, after that, beginning of new season, i would not change fresh oil again.

Yep thats the plan!

Just had my 30k service. Cost was AUD1480.

They had to adjust all closing shims and replaced all the collets, they were flogged out - dealer tells me this is not uncommon. Below is the check sheet used by the dealer.

Big $ for the service.....I'm at 22k so I'm not looking forward to the Desmo service. How does it feel after the service?

It's feels and sounds cleaner but there is less pop and crackle :(

I phoned first to see what the service was going to cost. It took one and a half days and most of that was spent on the values alone.

Has anyone quoted just valves and belts? I'm curious what they quote for time. It seems silly to pay a dealer to "check" all these components when I can very easily do the rest myself.

i have just had my 18,000mile demo and belt service done at ducati leeds .it cost £438.00 but i didn't have the engine oil changed as i change it myself every 6000miles .Also it is a bit cheaper due to the "winter" labour rates in place there at the moment.

Winter rates, there's a chuckle, never heard of such a thing here in the colonies! In 2015 at Bentley Motorrad my 30,000km service cost was $1213CDN and took 6.5 hours(@ $115/hr!!). As it was still on warranty I decided to stick with the dealer from which I bought the bike.

This was the first time i had been to a dealer in about 8 years for a major service and I definitely suffered some sticker shock. On my previous 2 ST2's, a friend who is a helicopter mechanic did the tricky parts of my servicing charging a very reasonable rate. Now that the bike is well past warranty I will not be taking it to the dealer for the 60000km service and my buddy is willing to tackle the 4V adjustments. So what if a service light blinks!

On the whole the bike has been very dependable and the only mishap being a failed clutch cable.

cheers
Colin
