9k service question

2013 Hyper..
I have 8,000 miles so called the most respected dealer in my area, about 50 miles away. For the full 9k service it's about $320.. Sound OK? I never used a dealer before, did my own work on Guzzi's but think it might be good to have a full inspection first time around?
A closer dealer said it would be about $185 depending on parts? Not sure what parts other than filter would be in the 9k service?

Also first dealer looked up my vin and says I need the throttle recall and the can filter (what is that?) which they will do at the same time. Do I need to ask them to check that it has the latest map?
Other guys in Minnesota, is there a Ducati guru I should be going to?

Sounds like a good idea to have someone give it a look over.

If the belts haven't been changed in 5 years, I'd probably have them do it.

My dealer charged me $40/spark plug just in parts cost. I have done all my own maintenance since, excepting belts and valves. Once you learn how to take off the gas tank it's pretty straightforward.

Do belts really age regardless of miles? What kind of cost for the belt job? Is it an interference motor ?

It is an interference motor. I'm not a duc expert, but experts say a change every 2 years regardless of mileage is a good idea. Don't know the price, but I'd guess around $300 including parts.

If money is tight and the bike is running well - I'd pull the front plug for a quick check, do your own oil change, call the air filter good - and have the shop do the belts and a general look over.

Later you can wrestle with the gas tank - check the top plug and the air filter - change them if you need to - about $40.00 total.

The 9K service IIRC is simply an oil change, chain tension, and air filter (which depends on how much dust/bugs you ride in). All relatively easy stuff.

$320 depends on how handy with a wrench you are and how much your time is worth. Many on here will say pulling the tank is no big deal (only way to get to air filter and top plug) but, my 1st time took an entire weekend and I suffered some complications from incorrect installation. I've done it about 3 times since and still don't enjoy it. If you were planning on a tuner of any sorts, this would be the time.

My bike is almost 6 years old. Original belts. It goes in for 18K soon.

You should definitely take it in for the recall. Electronics have been know to fry the dash without the filter put in. For that alone, I'd take it to the dealer and pay the fee to have it all done there, and inspected for the first check.

This is coming from someone that prefers doing the work instead of taking it to any shop, including the dealer.

In reference to the gas tank, I too spent hours trying to remove the tank by following the manual instructions, but later found a way to do it easier. It's still time consuming, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

The service bulletin repairs (not official recalls - so they won't show up in a website VIN search) are free - so no fee.

Tank is 20 -30 minutes after the first time struggle - but plenty of info on the site about things to look out for (mainly: remove the front rubber spools that the front of the tank hooks on to, and you have to wedge it past the seat lock once the rest of the nuts and bolts have been removed.)

The main thing I'd have them look at (apart from the belts) are the drive train, the bearings, and the brake pads. In my experience, after 9000miles the plugs were fine as was the air filter. Oil is a basic change - wet sump.

spark plugs are replaced every 9k miles, air filter is 18k miles.
Timing belts are every 5years on this engine or 18k miles, along with valve clearance check and adjust if req.. It was the older engines that were recommended every 2 years.
I'd fit a foam air filter and clean it every 9k with the spark plug change.
Brake fluid will need changing, fork oil and coolant too.

I wonder why the belt interval was changed? Regardless, in my experience neither the plugs or the filter needed a change (although there was a bee in the filter housing), but easy enough to check. I'd still do the belts - the thing has been sitting around for a while and 5 years is almost up.

I am doing the belts and oil/filter, brake and coolant fluid flush, overall checkup with a local guru. Then taking it in for the throttle and can filter service bulletins. Thanks all.
