Avoiding wheelies

The DTC will limit a wheelie I imagine, but I don't do them, never have and at 67 I'm NOT starting now. :)

ABS should prevent a stoppie, not trying that either tho. :)

I have been wondering the same thing. I set up my sport mode with 0 abs and 0 dtc. Havent really built up the nerve to try a full wheelie but have lifted it about 4 or 5 inches of the ground. FYI your abs light will flash continuously if you turn abs setting to 0. Post a video if you do wheelie!!

I have DTC 1 set on my Sport mode and wheel lifts aggressively with a quick twist in 1st at around 5K rpm. If I shift to 2nd and give it full twist it will usually float the wheel a couple inches for a while. I took an advanced MSF class last week and with ABS on 2, never found the chatter point in front brakes during hard braking. Any bike will stoppie if get your weight far enough forward and work the bite point smooth enough.

I'm not walking it down the street every chance I get but I can tell you it will loop in a heartbeat if you get stupid with it in 1st. I got all that dumb stuff out of my system a long time ago and the fine in FL is harsh for wheelies/stoppies: $1000!

How does the ABS stop wheelie? Can ABS apply break to back wheel in order to stop front wheel lift up.

No it wont apply the rear brake, not sure though if it will use the front abs speed sensor on the front wheel, to determain the different wheel speeds and cut engine power, either that or its just the dtc that stops it???

If ABS is disabled it wont recognise the different wheel speeds and allow the wheel to lift???

The traction control will get its information from, speed sensors, TPS, rpm, etc.

and alter accordingly either cutting spark reducing engine advance and also affect the fuel injectors stopping fuel if necc.

It’s the weirdest thing when the traction control engages, the engine exhaust note changes at first then the power goes flat all the while the red dash light is flashing. I did some 80 mile last weekend on some gravel / dirt roads and every time I got on the throttle the TC would light up…

I did a silly experiment the other day. On a rainy day I selected sport mode and increased the DTC level to 7 , red light was blinking when ever I went quickly on the throttle. Just wanted to see how it works.

I'm not. :)
Just curious if the ABS and/or DTC has this function.

ABS seems to control stoppies with rear wheel lift up, according to the owners manual. And to be able to do this, there should be some kind of sensor that controls if the bike is horizontal or not. Or..........?

Traction control will put the end to your wheelie fun sooner or later.

Crank the throttle, real wheel accelerates, front wheel lifts and thus stops accelerating.

Computer sees rear wheel spinning faster than front wheel and thinks "this is bad..."

Game over for your wheelie.

I am glad you guys brought this up. I never thought about DTC and ABS working together to stop a wheelie. I have to admit I was pretty bummed when the bike wouldn't wheelie on the few attempts I made. Made me miss my Streetfighter for the for the first time. Anyway... gonna turn both off and give it a try.

Like I said, lifts no problem even on DTC-1. It'll skip and hover a couple inches momentarily on DTC-3. ABS would could only possibly intervene a wheelie on ABS-2, as it's the only setting that prevents rear lift.

Ok, then DTC 1 and ABS 1. Thanks!
