Does anyone know if it is possible to charge the battery through the 12v accessory sockets on the hyperstrada ? i`m thinking of plugging my optimate directly into one of them............

apologies , this has already been answered elswhere :)

I doubt it......the 12v sockets will charge your phone and camera when the bike is running. So I'm assuming that they are on a circuit linked to the alternator, which is where the power comes from.
I know I looked at my battery minder when I first got the bike and it's wired directly into the battery circuit.

Of course you could specifically rewire one of them to do what you want but then you will be short an external power outlet!!

That doesn't seem right Aussie. I read that the 12v power outlets are powered at all times, but that the battery has built in protection and will shut them down if voltage drops below 11.2 or something. They are powered off the battery. Charging through the powerlet should work.

The power outlets are switched with the ignition, so they are useless for charging when parked. That's why my dealer installed the direct battery connection.

Thanks silenthunter. What kind of connection is it? Same as the other two external sockets (can't remember the name of the socket type)?

Some dealers, like mine, ran a charger plug from the battery to an accessible place that doesn't require taking the seat off. Mine pokes out near the rear spring. I thought they came from the factory that way but guess my dealer just does it to all the new bikes he receives.

Theres a male/female charging port on all the hyperstradas which you can hook up to a battery tender if you aren't running the bike for a while. That's what that thing is that pokes out from the bottom left side of the seat.

I just bought a Tecmate Optimate 4 TM-341 Dual Program model that is touted to charge through the Can-Bus (DIN-Hella) ports on both Ducati and BMW. I own a 2016 Ducati Hyperstrada with 2 such sockets. You also need the Tecmate O-02 adapter to convert from SAE to DIN-Hella and you need to follow the procedure to switch the Optimate 4 from program 1 (STD) to program 2 (CAN-bus) mode. With the key off or Lock position when you plug in the Optimate lights flash and you will hear the bike clicking and cycling. After several seconds I detached for safety. I then tried starting the motorcycle and watched the Optimate 4 go into charging cycle. I then turned the key to "Off" and the Optimate changed from charging mode to a flashing LED 5 mode. The Optimate 4 is unable to keep the port open after the ignition key is switched off. I corresponded with Tecmate technical support and received this reply...

"From the feedback from the engineering team, it seems as though that the charger will not work through the Ducati Canbus port."

The only work-around would be to deliberately manipulate one of the 2 DIN-Hella sockets on the Hyperstrada by re-wiring direct to the battery to being a direct circuit bypassing the ignition switch. I'm not too keen on doing that so will simply continue to use my dangling SAE adapter.

Hope this helps others as I found it very frustrating and time consuming worrying the entire time I was going to damage my Ducati electrical system listening to all the clicking and cycling noises trusting that it may stop. It doesn't. If you try it, do not go more than 7-10 seconds as by then it should have worked. As my bike is a 2016 model, I do not know if it will work on other years.

Sad because it would be convenient not to have "dangling" SAE tails direct wired to the battery to connect to maintainers. Optimate had a good idea, just poor execution.

Just buy the double din connector and wire to your battery, like my shop did when I bought it. I use a Battery Tender Jr.

The DIN ports are on the canbus system. They are switched and limited to 5amps which is about 60 - 75 watts depending on your revs. If running an SAE from the battery puts too much on the terminals, I'd run a fuse block. I'll be installing an Neutrino Aurora this winter for this, and other reasons.
