Consistently Consuming MAP sensors

I've ridden with bad MAP sensors (or at least, the dealer said they were bad and replaced under warranty) bike would drop into limp mode but then run fine after being restarted, usually for the rest of the day, pulling hard, revving all the way like nothing was up. Only way to tell was that the CEL would be on for a while before it cleared, which I think means the bike was not getting further errors, so maybe in my case the sensors were being flaky but not entirely dead. That little issue is really the only annoyance I have with the bike at this stage, I'm happy enough with the fueling and everything else.

I refrain from complaining about her because most of my issues arise from something I've "upgraded". I pay the price for tinkering but I'm in this death spiral of compounding issues that I just can't seem to get in front of. I patch one thing and then another leak springs (metaphor, but dealt with a lot of leaks, too). She was fine in stock form. The clutch was dog ****, so even if I had a stock mindset, I would have addressed that.

I can get it. That is the precise reason i am not wanting to get into any mods to the engine per se. i am happy with the stock things. the only mods i do are modes like windshields. i even fear to plug a mobile charger to the main electrical circuits fearing any spike from that can fry the whole bike and therefor carry a powerbank to charge my phone when riding.

i got the bike to the service centre. they plugged the bike and to my surprise, it is the Acceleration Position Sensor that was replaced 1000km ago goes bad again. since the part is covered in warranty, i will get it replaced in part warranty. i guess the APS doesnt like rains and goes kaput.

Makes sense. I was told software patch for TPS/ APS but they could have replaced TPS, as well. It was 8 years ago so I may have forgotten the details.

I got the bike checked, the APS/TPS replaced. CEL disappeared with a new APS/ TPS. Now she revs up with power to the wheels to lift up. Although, its sorted, i still need to figure out what caused this to fail within 2800kms. I also need to find how the Can-Bus line filter failed a few weeks before this. This filter is the 3rd filter in 2 years.

Would you guys suspect riding in a heavy downpour cause these items to fail, especially the filter because its tapped into the harness and not made as part of the harness. if yes, what is the solution. would sealing the mating surface of the APS with sealant that will block the rain water enter the APS assembly.

i am thinking of making a permanent solution with having the wires tapped to harness using quick connect waterproof 3 pin connector. all i do would be then simply unplug the faulty one with new one and carry the new one as spares. i may not be able to clear the errors in the ECU, but the bike may fire up normally. i am just letting my mind chase the wild goose. any guesses on this.

I don't know what year/ gen you have, but the 2013-2014s had first model generation bugs, but they were very inconsistent. I have one of the first sold in FL and never experienced the really bad issues - coils, disco dash, vapor lock.

My 821 was ridden in FL/ VA downpours for 4 years and I never experienced a moisture related issue. I have some nasty rainy seasons in southern Italy and I don't let rain stop me unless it's super dangerous. I've certainly found corrosion in some bad places but it was not a root cause of anything I could find. I've had many more issues associated with harsh roads/ vibrations shaking things loose.

If you are talking about having a spare dash available, check the new thread from the Polish guy that says he can fix them. If you have one of your old units, maybe spend the $300 and have a ready spare in your bag.

This makes me think of something else. On an older hyper I had a problem where the dash would do the christmas tree thing and then drop the bike into limp mode which prevented any real acceleration until restarting. It appeared random but got more frequent over time. Finally a mechanic (not the dealer) figured out it was a short in the harness where it enters the frame. They zip tie the harness at that point and over time it causes the cables to flex and crack. It could be you have a short somewhere in your harness causing this. IN the case of my bike, it was bad enough near the end that turning the bars hard lock would cause the issue, as would grabbing the harness and shaking it. Might be worth checking, the main point where the harness is stressed is right at the point where it enters the frame near the head tube.

I have MY2014 Hypermotard. Maybe i'm the unfortunate ones to have the bike with repeated errors. Although all of this, i still love it for its nimbleness and daily rideability. Maybe for my rides in the rain, i my get myself a good powerful scooter like Yamaha Aerox to avoid unnecessary expenses.

As for the spares, i was referring to the Can-Bus filter that's connected to dash. I can't send electronic items from india and get it back repaired without having licences to export. so that possibility is knocked off. i had found out a dutch company who repaired dashes and ecu's with 3 year repair warranty. it would have costed me fraction of the brand new ecu, but due to the restrictions, i had to drop that idea and spend about 700$ for new one from Ducati. Best part of the whole thing is my Ducati Service centre guy is supporting me as much he can to get my bike sorted.

I do agree on this @N4teTheGreat. I am thinking of doing this with the help of my service centre guy to make life simpler. the filter can be connected to the frame then with good enough room to move around saving many things in the long run. waterproof connectors are available to do the job. i will work over it in the couple of weeks.

If it's not a mid harness short/high resistance open then what I tell people that ride in the rain is to disconnect every connector and apply dielectric grease to each one then reassemble. Ducati is know for electrical issues and this will assure a solid connection and to seal out water.

Arai thanks for the advice. One question, the grease is applied to the connector body or the electrical pins inside. I will be having my Desmo due soon, then i can ask the service centre to check the electrical fully. I will also ask them to open the GPS/ NAV port behind the dash to connect my device.

It can be added to both. Keep in mind, you don't need alot when applying it to the pins .
