Dead start button?

Before I run off to the dealer (wasting a rare day off work) I wanted to see if anyone here had an idea of whats going on.

Problem: I turn my key, startup sequence performs normally, go to hit starter button on controller.... and I receive absolutely no response. Its like im hitting a dead button. No attempt from the starter.. no clicking noise... nothing.

What ive done so far:
Brand new battery
Checked fuse boxes in front left fairing and under seat
(all ive had time for)

I had this, too..a few times.
Just turned the electric off and on again and then it starts normally.

I recognized much problems with the electric at the Strada, It's not the best one.

NiceWeatherManni, I'm not sure what you mean by "turn electric on/off again"
I have tried to start it up many times, also unhooked battery, installed new battery, etc etc.

Additional things I have tried:
-checked the ECU fuses (the 2 30A under the seat), also fine.
-I considered the kickstand kill switch but have tried with it in neutral and clutch engaged so I can say somewhat confidently that isnt the issue.
-Double checked a PIN code was not entered on accident on the immobilizer

I really hope it's not the case, but when I had this exact problem [like you say, everything seems fine but *nothing* happens when you push the button - no click of the solenoid or anything] it was the ECU. I had to get the bike taken to the dealer, was given a loaner for a full week, and they finally just took the ECU out of a 'strada that they had in stock.

I'm rooting for you that it's not the same issue I had, but it sounds like it...

Trying pulling the dash fuse with power on. I blew this fuse a couple times wiring lamps and the dash takes a few startups to re-learn a few parameters, like total mileage, etc.

I believe it's fuse slot 2 in forward box. 10A

Oh, and bike will start when dash fuse is removed. Try that, too.

jerdog53: I have tried both of those

Frank Rizzo: I am already on my 2nd ECU as the first update from the Factory bricked my first ECU-just got lucky they had the demo unit. (so it wouldnt surprise me a bit)

gatdammit: I will give this a shot when I get home from work... interestingly enough, my total mileage/odometer hasnt worked the last 3,000mi ive ridden.

If anyone has any further ideas Im open to hearing them! Much appreciated!

uh oh. sounds like another blown ECU. you should have them trace the whole electrical system. personally, i would strip the horn and not mention it.

lol gat, I don't think I fully understand your comment. Does the horn have some sort of extreme value that I do not understand?

I suppose I will be heading to the dealership in the morning when I get off work... just what I wanted to do after 12 hours of graveyard shift.

Liability ? hum !

Hello
I am the happy owner on an HS since may 2013.
and have about 11000 km.

First trouble around 500 km: dead start button.
Had to bring it back to the dealer: ECU reset and update fixed the issue

Second ECU update, on dealer request around 4000, which was the good one: to obtain the smooth rev effect.

Second trouble around 6000 km: clutch cable broken while driving, warranty replacement.

Third trouble around 8000 km: lost the central stand left axe bolt while driving and had to stop and find a temporary fix to prevent the stand to interact whith chain.
Both axes bolts replaced and correctly secure locked ( locktite) : check yours !!

Fourth issue: the front brake shacking effect at low speed ( reported in other threads. not the pad, not the disk, still investigating

Fifth issue yesterday @ 11000: the christmas tree syndrom.
Was running fine, and suddenly all dashboard signal started to flash randomly, warning lights on. and engine power self reduced.
After a poweroff /on cycle: engine errors, can bus error, suceeded to restart and drove back safely home, with the christmas tree mode.

Bike back to dealer: first diagnostic: ecu / electronic / cabling / contacts probable issue. The bike turned crazy, on power on, the warning lights, all dash indicators, the cooler fans are on, as well has the break light are flashing randdomly. Very nice
Power off, remove the key, and the christmas tree syndrom is still on, for about 5 mn, then stop. huuu!

They will fix it for sure, and they will take the opportunity to install the steering head upper bearing seal upgrade.

From my experience with car service shops, if you walked in and said something like "I was installing this aftermarket horn and then the dash CB blew and now the starter doesn't work...", they will typically try and blame the non-approved accessory and faulty craftsmanship for causing the problem and refuse to warranty the work.

Bike shops seam to be more reasonable in general, plus you have past ECU issues, so might be overreacting. Still, if it were me, I'd just leave the entire horn installation out of the discussion.

Hell, I've even read of manufacturer's (or their lawyers) even following forum threads to catch people filing claims not being completely honest.

gat I believe you may be confusing this with another thread, ive never touched my horn. thanks though. I'll be taking my bike to the shop this wednesday to hopefully remedy all issues.

I'll post what issue caused this as soon as I am informed.
Thanks all

UPDATE FROM DEALER:

The dead start button issue was caused by a LOW-BATTERY fault, they had to reset it at the shop.
I asked if this would be an issue everytime I encountered a low battery and he said he would have to run the battery down to duplicate this for my answer..... I said "if I have to run to a dealer everytime I get a low battery I will be incredibly angry."

-My rotors were also warped. I have been experiencing a Pulsing-like stop everytime I engage the front brakes since I've owned the bike however it was more of an annoyance then a "run back to the dealer and fix it" type issue. Dealer submitted ticket to ducati to replace rotors.

-They also found a small leak coming from a radiator hose... so those inclined may want to give their hoses a once-over.

-Two other issues were fixed coming from ducati.... some sort of rubber stopper on the steering head and a bundling of some wires somewhere on the rear of the bike(I didn't follow closely sorry)

bullzeye81 - Are you working with the Indianapolis dealer? Ive had good experiences with them so far so hopefully they are treating you well.

Out of curiosity was your bike sitting long enough to run the battery down or was it some sort of fluke or problem with the battery itself?

I also had a loose radiator hose that was fixed when I went in for the recall steering stem gator as well. It wasn't causing any problems but would leave some drops on a few occasions.

Yes Dryer I am. Purchased bike from Commonwealth(louisville) but now live more north so Indy is closer.

I had the bike sitting in my bedroom (70deg all winter) so in my ignorance I left the battery untended-wont be making that mistake again.
I sincerely hope the ECU update fixes the low batt fault as I am planning a 2500+ mi trip this summer and dont want to be stranded out west -_-

Most owners have not had any problems with the ECU that weren't caused by some homebrew electrical work. This forum tends to be a refuge for owners who have problems, so it's not a valid sampling. And many dealers install a Battery Tender connector before delivery. The constant drain is a well-known issue. Once you get it fixed you should not have any problems. Enjoy your trip out West.
