Hi everyone,
By popular demand here on the forum, I created more instrument panel protectors that fit both the Hypermotard and Hyperstrada. As we know, the factory display plastic is very delicate. It is easily scratched by touching or cleaning, and it becomes hazy over time when parked in the sun. Ducati has been using the same instrument housing on Hypermotards since around 2010, so if your display has the same shape as mine, it should fit your bike. This includes the later model 796, 1100, 821, and 939 as far as I know.
I updated the design since the first version almost a year ago. These are constructed of hard-coat clear polycarbonate that blocks UV light and prevents accidental rubbing against your display surface. It's the material Ducati should have used originally. It sits a few millimeters above the surface and clips onto the groove in the housing using custom Delrin brackets. The clear shield and mounting clips are held together using black stainless steel screws. They are CNC machined by me here in California using high quality materials. A new instrument panel is $1023 from Ducati. That explains my motivation in making these...!
Installation
The protector installs without any tools - just align the bracket with the instrument panel groove on the left side, and pull it down over the right side until it clicks into the groove. During washing, you can easily remove the cover by hand.
Pricing
I am asking 79USD shipped 2-day within the US. For those outside the US, contact me with your details and I will calculate the shipping cost using USPS with tracking. To avoid filling up my PM box, please e-mail me at:
with your request and forum name, or if you have any private questions.
More info:
How should I clean it?
Use a soft cloth with soap and water, or a gentle glass cleaner (alcohol and water).
Will it cause glare?
I have been using mine for over 1 year with no complaints. At very narrow angles, you will get a reflection. With polarized sunglasses, it's not noticeable to me.
Will it damage my instrument panel?
No, the protector fits snugly, but still has a slight tolerance to allow removal. Also, the front half of the instrument panel is made of rubber, which should dampen any vibrations. The only time you may see damage is if you push very hard on the front of the protector and break it.
Does the protector seal around the display?
No, there is a gap sufficient enough to allow for accidental flexing, and prevent raindrops from forming a solid layer between the protector and display surface. In fact, dust tends to collect at a slower rate than without the protector.
Side note - if anyone here has access to an old damaged instrument panel of this type, I would be interested in taking it apart to see about replacing the plastic itself. This would be a good option for those who have seriously damaged theirs already. The material I use is not as hard as glass, but about 30X more scratch resistant than uncoated polycarbonate, and blocks around 99% of the UV spectrum. It is also extremely shatter resistant, making it a good candidate for this application.
