Engine Start Problem

Hi everybody!

Last Saturday, I tried to start the engine and pushed start button.
Cell motor worked with vivid sound but engine did not start.

The bike was transferred to the dealer.
Dealer found nothing wrong with battery and ignition plugs.
They even tried to start engine with a different battery but engine did not start.
They cannot find any issue.
One more thing, the computer analyzer could not find any problem.

Does anybody have same issue and know the cause of the problem?
I am very disappointed with my HS as I had sudden engine stalls while riding (slow down) in the past.

Kind regards,

HiroTokyo

I never had starting issues but did have a couple stalls before my first software update. Some had same issues you speak of, plus a nagging limp mode issue (rpm's limited).

Have you had a software update?
Do you still have the evap canister installed?

@Hiro

check the software update and the electronic-immobilizer System!

Hi Hero

Maybe overfilled the gas tank? Does your bike have the California Emissions Canister fitted?

Thanks guys,

I had ECU update after engine stalls in slowing down.
We do not have California Canister in Japan.

I will discuss with my dealer as they should have talked with Ducati Japan on this starting issue.

Kind regards,

The dealer updated the ECU to the 3rd version.
And engine starts smoothly now.
It was ECU mapping issue according to the dealer.

Kind regards,

Glad you got your Duc flying again. You had one of the more serious start/stalling issues I can remember.

Thank you gatdammit!

After more than 4000 mile on my red HS, I can not forsake it.
I went 12 days trip with the HS to the far east and north of Japan.
I wish the software update made it perfect...

Best regards,

HiroTokyo

I don't understand always Software update is the problem. Its looks like you have to go every two month to your Dealer for "SOFTWARE UPDATE":(

Yes, I am fed up with the "ECU sofware" issues.
The Ducati Japan and the dealer are just waiting issues in stead of taking preventive action.

I will consider to trade in my HS if I will have another "software update"

Guys, this is a new bike (ok about 3/4 year old) and so it most have teething problems. And its normally with electrics! I am still planning on getting a Strada in September, hopefully most of these issues have been sorted by then.

But there is another thread which congratulates Ducati on pushing out these fixes. There are some companies which charge for them, or worse! (There needs to be a law suit to get things even started!)

I have never owned a Ducati, but loads of Jap bikes and one American one. Some had issues, like a manufacturing fault with the crank of my RGV250. I didnt have the bike for about 6 months whilst it got sorted out under warentee, but I remember the good times on it now ;)

I've had quite a few warranty claims for front brakes/forks and they were all covered by Ducati. So far, I feel like I've purchased a premium bike.

I agree. It also happens in the aircraft industry. Every now and then, they issue service bulletins/updates for aircraft that are more than 10 or 20 years old. Guess that's how it is with high performance machines.

My last two bikes, a KTM and a Triumph, both of them had a number of software updates. See, that's the beauty of software, you can easily fix things over time. imagine if the ECU were hard coded. You be stuck with the version of the controller from when they designed it.

Thank you for you comments guys,

Yes, this is brand new model and I should be a little bit patient with the software bugs.
I am lucky that the trouble is cured just updating the software.
I did not know same things happened in KTM and Triumph.
I thought it is Italian job, but it is wrong.

Kind regards,

I think its also a dealer problem general, they should inform you faster when an update is coming! My dealer here in Germany is not the best in this way.
He wants so sell bike not to solve problems you have with your bike!!!

Well hell- sitting about 5 miles from home and the lil duc is just turning over with an error message on the dash. Thought I had the most recent updates but maybe not. Will have it picked up tomorrow and taken to the dealer. 1700 miles without a hiccup and here I sit.

For those interested-my bike started last night and then this morning. It left me stranded at a BMW motorcycle dealership. Seven hour ordeal to get it towed to dealer and have it worked on. Ended up being a relay to the fuel pump that melted for some unknown reason. Once the dealer had it they stayed late to get it fixed-got to give that to them. It was not a happy experience.
