On one of my holiday trips to Scotland I got a 4 mm wood drill bit in my rear tire. Drove about 300 km with it before the tire ran out of air. Got it plugged and did about 4000 extra km's on it before tire change. So it is an option to get it plugged by a professional (bike store).
But no one would garanty for a repaired tire so I would change it.
It's hard and I was angry too when this happened to me (2 times in 2012...brand new tire) but what's more important: your life and safety or to safe the money?
His tire is already 3/4 gone, why would you risk a blowout, to save quarter of a crappy tire, throw a road 3 on that bad boy and get a little more confidence in the corners.
I keep a little roadside kit in my bags after my high speed blowout. Found this at a recreation store: CO2 Inflator
My brands different and I went with a very compact nozzle that fits right on the little CO2 cartridge. It takes about 3 of them to fill the rear- there's charts online or at the bike counter. This and a plug kit will at least get me home.

You are right. The nail made it's way sideways. I dont see it as a treath but as R6chase said it the tire is ultimately due first thing next season. I've been lucky in my bad luck the damage only appened when the tire was nearing the end of it's useful life.
