Front fork seals

Anybody replaced their fork seals? My right fork is weeping so am about to change them out as soon as I receive the parts I ordered. The manual I bought a couple of years ago talks about how to remove the forks but offers no explanation of replacing the seals.

Does anyone have a link showing the seal replacement procedure?

Sometimes they just need cleaned. Check out Fix Leaking Fork Seals With | SealMate.net You can probably fabricate your own tool using an old credit card or similar piece of plastic. If it works you've saved yourself time and effort or $$ if taking to the dealer. If it doesn't, you haven't spent much, especially if you make your own.

My "wrenching buddy" and I are planning on trying this approach first. We'll see what happens...

The online manual I bought a couple of years ago has no info on rebuilding the forks or replacing the seals. It does list the amount of fork oil required(553cc right leg, 415cc left leg)but does not list the weight of oil to be used. I've also read that people have tried different fork oil weights and that has improved the performance of the forks.

What weight fork oil have others been using? I see from owners manual that OEM is Shell 7.5

They are the same as any other fork. Pry off the dust seal. Remove retaining ring, hammer out the old one, press in a new one.

All is well

Picked up the "Seal Mate" seal repair tool this AM and after watching the online video went through the routine. After a 50km test ride over some relatively uneven pavement, there is no sign of oil leaking. So much for replacing the fork seals!

Here's a link to the site that sells these:

They are also available at lots of MC shops. I paid $8CDN.

Well, the Seal Mate repaired lasted a few hundred miles so I really do need to replace the seals, at least on the right leg. I have the leg off the bike and am planning on taking it to my local KTM shop to have the seal installed.

I assume the bracket that holds the brake calipers has to come off the bottom of the fork. There appears to be one pin holding the bracket to the fork tube. The pin looks like it started out as a hex head and then was peened(?)to make sure it didn't move.

So, assuming the bracket has to be removed, what's the recommended method for removing the "pin?"

TIA

found the answer

Nurse Daddy explained removal in his Andreani Install thread. I think I'll just take the fork as is over to the KTM shop.

cheers

EArlier this week I removed the forks and delivered them to my local KTM dealer. They replaced the seals for me and had them back by 400pm. Reinstalled forks following morning and took it for a test ride. All is well!

Hardest part of the whole fork removal-reinstallation was out and reinstalling the 2 hex head screws on the underside of the "beak," 2 of the 4 that secure the headlight fairing. Was difficult to shine any kind of light in there let alone see what I was doing!

Anyways, first time I've ever removed forks and am happy to say there were no glitches. Maybe next winter I'll remove them again and install a Mupo cartridge on the right side.
