Long time listener, first time caller.
I just picked up my leftover 2016 model up in Indy a couple weeks ago and couldn't be happier. There are still a few '16s left that are cheaper than new 821 models and demos that I have found, and I have to say some of the electrical issues with the 821s and ECUs I've read about is why I chose the 939 over the 821.
First of all I have to say that this is an absolutely incredible machine. I am currently only at 430 miles and rapidly approaching the first service that I will be quite happy to get out of the way and consistently get her above 6k revs.
I am currently coming from a heavily modified 2013 DR650 which has been an awesome bike, but even with the power upgrades on the DR it doesn't come close to comparing to the power, handling, braking, and overall performance of the HS. Not to mention twice the price tag also!!!
I had also considered many other bikes before purchasing this one but for the price I paid, I am quite happy with what I chose.
I also had in the running the FJ09, Tiger, 1090 Aventure R, and multi-950 and while the HS isn't as good for the offroad use and longer rides of the other competitors, for a commuter or rides with breaks every couple hours this will fit the bill perfectly. I was ultimately looking for a two up go fast machine that isn't specifically a sport bike. Ick!
My only gripes so far I have to say have been with the side cases which seem to be a nagging issue with many HS owners, and the stock seat. The seat is what I think will restrict the ride time. It is very cradled for me at 5'11'' 175lbs. The height is wonderful but the potentially "ball crushing" positioning limits its range. With the 150 miles of fuel range, it works well with break times for discomfort of any kind. Maybe some of the other saddles will prove to provide different comfort. The first ride home down I-74 was quite uncomfortable but seems to have gotten better after a couple hundred miles. But still nothing going to be riding cross country on.
The side cases were initially very very difficult to remove. I have since very lightly sprayed some WD in the latching mechanism and now the case I had the biggest problems with removing are now impossible to get to stay latched/locked on the brackets. The bags come off quite easily after the WD but not having a single bag latch properly is troublesome considering freeway speeds approaching 80mpg and bumps could prove to be a problem.
At any rate, I went a little long worded here so my apologies for that but hopefully the honeymoon phase of ownership will continue for some time now.

Oh and one last thing for now. This bike is STUPID expensive to insure. I mean, really really stupid!

Depends on how your insurance company rates it. Most just bulk group all Ducatis together and it's really expensive. I had to shop around, but I get a full year of great coverage insurance for $600 on both my bikes.

I think that may in fact be the case. The commonwealth of KY considers it as a hyper 939 nothing else. So possibly our insurer is doing the same. They just consider all hypers the same, as sport bikes.
I am also at a little over 600 for the year for full coverage on both. Considering it almost tripled over my DR for comparable coverage, it was a little hard to swallow at first. Now that I climb on top of her every morning, I don't think about the cost anymore. It's just smiles!

I got many quotes at 1300+ for both bikes with even worse coverage! Shopping around for insurance pays.

$600 for full coverage from State Farm in DC. I didn't shop around much as they cover my other bike, car and home. Probably should have.

I got my quotes prior to purchasing the bike so I knew what I was in for before I got into it. It was just a little shock going from 178 a year to over 600.
After riding in the time that I have, I've not really thought about the cost of ins. I just keep paying it, happily.
The radiator, oil cooler and engine guards arrived yesterday and have been installed. On the 939 models I would highly recommend the Evotech guards as they seem to be of good quality and give a good look to the bike. The 175 bucks spent on the full kit is much better than 557 on a new oil cooler when the front wheel thoroughly throws any debris at it.
On a separate note entirely, the side cases work well, when they do work. I didn't have much luck getting them off at first so I sprayed a little WD in the latch. Ever since I can no longer get the left bag to latch and stay latched so a good bump could potentially lose the R case. I'm not real happy about this, but in the grand scheme of things I don't need the bags to ride in the interim.
