Handguard upgrade options

Reading this quote just now:

That assembly is really cheap and fragile, Ducati should be ashamed of it. I can understand the forks, but this....:(

On top of that, it would cost nearly as much to fix them (with Ducati Performance handguards) as my fork work cost...:(:(

Has reminded me how I feel exactly the same about the OEM handguards, and would like to replace them with something that would actually provide some level of protection, rather than than just looking like they do.

I'm pretty sure that losing the indicators would be an MOT failure here in the UK, so keeping some form of front indicator is a must (and I assume, if you go LED, you'll need to piss around with in line resistors).

Has anybody done an upgrade to these? If not, has anybody had any good ideas about one?

No, but it seems like you could easily buy some good ones and cut a hole for the stock blinkers

The 'blinkers' are the cheapest part of them. I can live with the guards, but the signals are crap. Just try changing a bulb, you'll see.

I looked for it but could not find it just now. Someone recently posted about switching their front signals to the LED ones from another Duc model, with photos also, if I recall. Try searching on here.

Found it, thanks to Zibbit. The post was in the Hyper Photo Thread, see page 22.

Ducati performance hand guard set.. p/n 96280131A

Zibbit also posted individual part numbers.

Do we know if he had to put in-line resistors to slow down the blink rate (which is often an issue changing from bulbs to LED's)?

Thanks for finding the pic Zippy - they definitely look sturdier - are they metal rather than plastic?

I believe they are metal with plastic top and bottom. They are also available without the LED signals.

The kit would include resistors if they are needed, however when I put Ducati Performance LEDs on the rear of my Strada they worked just fine without them. I suspect that the 821's more modern electronics can handle this. There is no dedicated relay shown on any of the manuals I have, and the fuse blocks do not have any either.

Mmm, $374.59 though huh?

I'm gonna do a little research for cheaper options and post back what I find. Thankd for letting me know about LED compatibility zippy!

I swear, if someone shelled out for every Ducati Performance add-on, they could probably afford another Hyper. A few DP parts are worth it, if not only because there's no aftermarket alternative.

That's obviously part of Ducati's Business Model...

What are peoples opinions on these? Unsure if they would suit the 'strada - but they are available with integrated LED turn signals and offer real protection:

Yes inline resisitors came with the kit and needed to be used. They are beefy, I bet the bars would bend before you barely put a nick into the handguards in the event of a crash.. Let's hope I don't have to test that. Plus the multistrada LED signal lights are ridiculously bright, which I'm happy about.

I run those on the WR motard, and they've held up great in a low side. Signals are bright enough, easy to replace, and you can get plastic shields and save some cash versus the carbon.

Tell you the truth, the DP handguards are worth it for quality over the zeta handguards. But that's just my opinion... Take it or leave it for what that's worth. Here's a slightly better photo of the DP guards.

Thanks zibbit, I really appreciate the opinion. I feel the same - I've looked at everything I can find, options wise, and it's easy to tell the DP guards are the best quality of anything on offer. But it's just that cost - I can't find a way to justify it at present.

Looks like I might can this project after all - nothing else looks like it would really suit the Duc, other than an upgraded Duc product with a silly price tag!

For what? The DP Handguards I bought thru the dealer.. But you can also get them at lots of places online.. Just search the part number I posted.

The Zeta XC flasher hand Guards I picked up I think at a local Yamaha Dealer.. I believe they were supplied thru Parts Canada... But I could be wrong.. It's been a few years since I got them.

I found it... probably going to pass on upgrades for at least the first year. I got a double back stock 2013 and just want to make sure that I didn't get a disco ball version. Maybe during the winter I'll paint the hand guards white to match the bike color. I am considering getting the taller windscreen. Just gotta see how bad the wing gust is to my helmet.
