The fact that he contacted you makes me think there might be a deal to be made. I suggest you respond with your final offer on what amount you are willing to part with, make it clear you are not spending a penny more and you are not going back to the dealership unless you have it in writing. Let them work out whether they give you more for your trade or lower the price of the new bike. In the end, it shouldn’t matter to you, but it might to them.

Take into consideration what you would really take on your trade after dealing with CL time wasters and lowball offers for a couple of weeks, impact your trade will have on the sales tax you have to pay on the new bike, etc.

It’ll take you a few minutes to respond and all he can do is say “no”.

I told him to take a hike. He’s the same guy that sold me my HS and it’s really disappointing that as a return customer he couldn’t manage to give a better deal than the insult he gave us. When it’s my turn to get a new bike again I’ll be sure to go elsewhere.

The CL ad is posted and since we live on a main thoroughfare we’re going to put the bike out front with a sign on it too.
I sell lots of other stuff on CL so I know how to spot the bullcrap.
While we wait for a buyer we can research other bikes for her.

Good luck! Hope you get her on the saddle soon.

The NC700 came up on another forum I follow. We get a lot of Brits so they've had the NC750 a while. It's in the USA now ... reviews are good and it's a GREAT up grade from the original 700.

Higher rev limiter, more power , overall better.

I would read a few reviews of the new 750. The ACT trans also gets great reviews even for experienced riders.

Of course you won't easily find a used 750, so you can wait a while or buy new and pay all the fees and such. Buying on time is possible but stretches out the pain for a LONG time. Up to you!

Good luck!

PS: a stealer will never give you much credit for aftermarket items on her Yamaha. Sad but true. Better off selling off the goodies, put it back to stock. Value is the same.
Different story if selling to a private party ... and that is what I'm sure you will do. They will really appreciate the cool goodies on the bike!

When I bought my first new car, I was reading consumer reports and was really intrigued and frightened at the buying process. I ended up paying for a scouting report type service that tailored a packet towards the vehicle I was purchasing. A couple big lessons from that:

1. Negotiate the price of the vehicle before even mentioning a trade-in. They want your trade, you don't want it, and they'll use that as a bargaining to chip to keep the sale price on new vehicle high. Always be ready to pull the trade-in off the table.
2. Don't negotiate price based on a monthly payment amount. They'll massage loan options so you feel like you got a deal, but they're still getting the price they want on vehicle and if financing through them, getting all the interest.
3. Try and get multiple dealers competing for your purchase. I got 2 dealers in a bidding war and was sure I get best deal possible.

Can't say how much of this applies to the bike market. And upgrades/ add-on's don't matter to veteran shoppers, but they do to the right buyer. A tuned Subaru WRX STi will probably fetch more money than a stocker. Good aftermarket parts certainly matter to me. Usually, you do fair better pulling them and selling them piece by piece. A vanilla stocker also indicates it probably wasn't beaten on.

After some soul searching she’s decided that maybe a larger scooter might be best for her. With her ankle the way it is the floorboards of a scooter would be the least amount of strain.
While poking around on CL I found an Aprilia Scarabeo 500 for a reasonable price so I’m going to make an appointment with the seller and take her up to test ride it and see how she likes it.
As far as scooters go I like this one in that it has nice sized wheels which will do better on PA roads than units with the usual tiny wheels found on these machines.
I can’t imagine riding with such small wheels with road conditions this bad.

So we’ll see how this works.

So we drove 2 hours to look at the Scarabeo and it was not a pretty specimen. And it wasn’t inspected. Plus the guy wouldn’t let her test ride it. So we bailed and drove home.
Upon getting home I found an ad for a Yamaha Majesty 400 right up our street. I called and then we walked over to see it. Great condition, owner babied it and had all records of it. It’s an 04 but only 11K. And he let the lady ride it. Turns out she loves it. So scooter it is.

It’s a pretty big thing. And nearly 500 lbs but you wouldn’t know it because all the weight is down low. Surprised it had some pep to it. It takes off with respectable rapidness. Honestly it takes off about as fast as her V-Star can!

So we’re going to transact on Wednesday after looking through owners and service manuals.

Sounds like a good solution, those bigger scooters seem to be pretty solid.

It will be a good solution if she can actually ride the thing with her bad ankle. And we can finally go riding together as we planned long ago. She's eating her heart out each time I go out for a joy ride and text her nice pictures of the places I go.

So we got the scooter. Got a good neighbor discount too, the seller knocked $450 off his price for us.

I haven’t tried riding the beastie yet but it’s been a real pleasure watching my ball & chain have fun on it.
Though now it’s occurring to me that with her tagging along on my rides I’ll have to behave myself more. I guess that’s what they meant saying be careful what you wish for!

Congrats! You both ride safe.

Says who? Just wait at intersections :)

There's also this sinking feeling that I might be the one catching up at intersections. Given her greater riding experience and a review for the scooter i read written by the owner of a Monster saying he couldn't shake the thing off his tail in the twisties.

Here's what it looks like. Needs some cleaning up.
