How To turn Hyperstrada into a Hypermotard

Hi team

I recently purchased a Hyperstrada however I initially wanted a Hypermotard but where I live in Australia the Hypermotards are as rare as hens teeth and after 6 months of waiting I opted for the strada. I am looking to convert it to a full fat Hypermotard and I was seeking advice on what I would need to change.

So far I have discovered I need to:

- Remove grab rail and luggage frames from tail unit and replace with the 2 plastic tail panels
- Remove lower front mud guard
- Remove centre stand
- Replace big screen with black triangular front wind deflector cowl that will sit above the headlight
- Get original seat

Question 1

Has anyone done a Strada > Motard conversion and Is there anything else I have missed? I presume the engines the same on both bikes right and it's only aesthetics?

Question 2

- I can't for love nor money find red tail plastics on the internet apart from Aliexpress and I'm a bit nervous about buying these:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004579510372.html - And I can't find the original Hypermotard black front cowl to replace the screen anywhere online.

Does anyone have any experience buying the fake non OEM stuff or can they point me to where I need to go to purchase these?

Any help is much appreciated.

You never mentioned if you had an 821 or 939. If you have the low version of the Hyperstrada, then you're going to have to change the fork internals and the rear shock. Might as well get the Duc racing seat also. And if you're going 'full fat', better stock up on carbon fiber doo-dads and an obnoxious can for the exhaust. By now you should also be pricing a tuneable ECU. You'll love having one of those and will get to spend lots of quality time with it figuring it out. You'll probably get to meet lots of new people also. Frame sliders are a must have. Cuz ya know you're gonna huck it down the road at some point. Might as well toss those handguard/signal lights as they will disintegrate the first time you drop it and maybe just lose the signal lights all together. No proper motard has signal lights. A nice graphics kit will make you stand out in the crowd. Maybe just get a cheap wrap kit from Aliexpress and wrap that tail section in faux carbon fiber for now. If there's enough left over, you can cover up some of the other battle scars. Another thing you'll need is a quick shifter. I don't know what it is but all the fast guys have them. Remove the bar spacers as that will help you get into the elbows out 'attack mode'. Here's some additional advice from those that have gone down your road...in both directions.

Oh, BTW...i have a set of those tail cowlings in black that are still in the package. The previous owner bought them and realized he'd have to take the rack off and so he never put them on. You can have them for the cost of postage and if you post a picture of you replacing your old air filter. They're black but you can paint them or wrap those suckers!

Legend thanks @uncle brad solid advice!

Sorry I should have mentioned it's an 821.

Thanks for the offer of the plastics but I found some red ones last night.

I will keep you guys posted on how it turns out.

Thanks again for your input folks!

You and I did the opposite! I added strada bits to an SP. I will remove the windscreen for summer riding, but it is nice to have for winter! A top case is perfect for storing helmet, jacket, and gloves when commuting too.

@JackAttack757 I have a question about the front screen/wind deflector (see attached) I can't find this front cowl anywhere online, is it part of the dashboard/clocks or is it a separate piece that the screen replaces? I can't find it anywhere in the Ducati parts catalogue either. Thanks for your help.

@Johnnyrex Too easy! It is number 3 in the diagram with part number 48110892A. To gain access to the number 4 screws, you have to pull out two wire bundles which are located behind the headlight. Sadly the wire bundles are quite stiff. FYI, you may curse once or twice trying to perfectly repack the wire bundles when replacing the headlight, otherwise the headlight nor the fairing will lay flush.

The part is so so similar to the stock hyperstrada windscreen bracket, it just does not have the two arms. I ride around all summer with the strada piece in place minus the screen. Then for winter or long rides I just add the screen back. For me, the wire bundles were slightly too frustrating to deal with for a plastic cover, plus I liked the flexibility to add or remove the screen quickly.

@JackAttack757 thanks so much for this! You're a legend! Yeah after reading that I think I might take your advice and just burn around with the screen off and slap it back on for highway use, not sure I could be arsed with trying to repack the wiring bundles. Great info though thanks bud!

Howd the process turn out? Im about to begin the strada to motard conversion

It was pretty straight forward actually. I only did cosmetic bits and pieces and left the front mudguard and centre stand. The only thing to be aware of is you will need the dedicated hypermotard bracket to replace the strada bracket that holds the passenger grab rails. I thought I could just screw the hypermoptard tail piece plastics onto the strada mounts directly but that doesn't work. You can find all the bits here:

I also got the official ducati racing seat which transformed the bike by giving me way more room.

I also got the tail plastics from AliExpress and I was dubious at first but they proved to be a perfect match in terms of the red colour.

Good luck!

Just to say I didn't need any extra Ducati brackets to fit the Motard plastics to my stripped Strada. Maybe if your Motard conversion needs grab handles you would, but I just bolted the DP CF bits on after taking all the bag attachments off.

Or did I buy in a S/H tail-piece? Sorry, the memory is failing!

appreciate that! When I ride Honda sports bikes and did a conversion, I had to replace the subframe as well, on the hypers I was told the mounting bracket to the dual undertail exhaust is about 5 inches apart from the strada subframe. Did you replace the subframe as well?

I'm not sure about that as mine is just the single side-mounted exhaust

The Strada has a heavier flywheel and different charging system. Other than that the engine is the same.

I learned something new today! Is the flywheel a direct swap without affecting the charging system? A little more brap in my step wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Yes a direct swap. It's just bigger to make it smoother. You can take your Strada flywheel to a machine shop and have them turn it down a bit to get it even lighter than the motard. Mine is a motard and I turned mine down to get quicker revs. People complain about potential stalling on take off but that has never really happened to me

Do you have specs on the final dimensions? I’ve gone smaller on my Buell flywheels and the effect has been dramatic. I’d like a little more snap, so this might be a good winter project. First up will be +2 on the rear sprocket to mimic the 821 gearing.

I didn't actually measure the flywheel. I should have but I did weigh it. Went from 975g/2.146lbs to 735g/1.622lbs

That information is just as good, thanks! That’s a big reduction in mass and I’m sure it feels awesome. I’ve only added flywheel weight to one bike: an old KTM 2T that hated the slow stuff in the woods. Everywhere else I refer snappier revs.
