It's a Hyperstrada Not a BMW!

Hallo from Germany,

I follow this Forum for about One Year, and when i read through the threads
I find Many Folk want to make a BMW Out of the Hyperstrada!
Some Folk have to See it's a Ducati it's Not Perfect, if they want a Perfect Bike they have to go for a BMW!
Maybe i'm wrong but thats the way i see it!

Hi Steffen, I agree! So many people on here wanting all of the latest "adventure" gear...crash bars (that probably wont work), engine sump guards, new suspension all just to ride the bike at 50% of what it is already capable of on their commute to and from work. If you want a bloated SUV of a motorcycle get your 1200GS and be done with it!

That said, customizing and making a bike your own is a lot of fun, so if people want to do that, so be it! People will complain (and I have my issues with this bike), but it is more an expression of something that bugs THEM, and not a reflection of the bike itself. We are all different riders. For example, I LOVE long-distance touring (17,000km in 2 weeks has been done), and I can say already that the Hyper is far from the best bike I have owned for that. But for the other 99% of my riding, it is a hackuva fun bike, and the fact is it 200lb lighter, shorter, nimbler, and cheaper than a 1200GS or Multi, makes it the right bike for me. I will add some protective gear, some extra lights, and need no real justification.

So, in conclusion, who cares what people say. Just get out there and ride!

ps: I have never seen a "perfect" BMW, either, and neither has most BMW owners!
 
I thought I wanted a rigged out GS that would go anywhere (still think they look killer with aluminum luggage and crash bars). Then I talked to a guy that works at my dealership who owns one. He said while they're great bikes, they really aren't that great on the highway. That pretty much did it for me.
 
Count me in too as someone who was, and still is, very smitten by the awesomeness of the BMW GS. I think it's a fantastic bike for the niche that it fills.

For me though, as much as I respect the GS, my riding preferences [very twisty roads, smaller, flickable bikes with upright seating] lean more towards a big motard than an adventure bike, and Ducati positively nailed what I was looking for with the new Hypers. I like the older ones too, but the air cooled engine and 12 litre tank make them too impractical for me.

So yes, the BMW's and KTM's rule for the adventure bikes, but gimme the Duc any day for motard-style awesomeness. If I have a point, it's simply that - for me - motards and adventure bikes are quite different beasts, and I'm super happy about that.
 
My biggest problem is the Gear Folk want to but on the Hyperstrada.
For example the Panniers, they are bigger then the Hyperstrada self!
I think less is more and you have to see its a HYPERSTRADA;)

When deciding which bike to buy, being that I was not taking the bike off- road (other than fire roads), I bought the Hyperstrada rather than the 800 GS. I preferred the size, handling, and overall package of the Ducati. I am, however, putting Givi Trekker bags on the bike.... BMW esque or not. The HS bags are are pain to remove. I need the functionality for my commuter.
 
I really love my Hyperstrada.
I selled my BMW K1200S to buy this amazing bike.
Ducati it´s not a perfect bike, but neither BMW.
I just want to ride it and have lots of fun doing it.
If someone wants to add some lights, panniers or a wool roof, let it be, it´s his own bike
If you are happy painting it pink, its okay, just ride and respect!!
 
In my opinion, the Hyperstrada is much, much better than the BMW gs650 or 800. I have owned both. Same with the Multistrada and the 1200GS. The Hyperstada can actually be ridden off roads. The BMWs are just for show and not real dual sport bikes.
 
The HS bags are are pain to remove. I need the functionality for my commuter.

How so? Initially mine were a fight, but after following directions from this forum and lubing the lock (with Teflon multi-use spray) it now slides on and off effortlessly.

After a little liquid Teflon lube, my bags come off quite easily. That doesn't change the fact that the shape, while cool looking, is deeply stupid when it comes to things like grocery shopping. That's why in considering the Bellevue Ducati mount system.
 
One of the things I love about the Hyperstrada is its versatility. Strip all the accessories off and you have an aggressive sport motard that will keep up with sport bikes on most roads. Next week you can load up the bike, mount you're GPS and phone, plug in you're headphones and tour across the country in relative comfort. I like to do both of those so this bike fits me soo well!
 
The difference

Hyperstrada= faster
BMW= slower, more touring oriented, wind protection,etc
Hyperstrada= cool looking and light, mucho fun
BMW= okay looking and sturdy, still fun

Bike fall over:
Hyperstrada = with nothing on it.....$500 parts and un-ridable, carry breakable parts and epoxy for long trips

BMW= fully packed with gear help me pick this thing up and lets go ride.

Go fast have fun don't drop bike LOL
 
If I wanted a fun on the track bike, I would have gotten the Hypermotard. The strada is great for long distances, and most of the bits I'm going to add are oriented in that direction.

If you're taking it off road it works...but it's a very expensive dirt bike. I took mine onto a 4wd road and called it a mistake at 1/8 mile in. i wound up in large gravel next to a train track, sliding sideways half the time. I turned around and ran through a few puddles I probably shouldn't have on the way back to dry pavement.

I will take my HS onto maintained forestry/logging roads, after I add a radiator and sump guard.

And switch the tires. The stock Scorpion Trails are better than most street tires off road, but worse than about 90% of more off-road oriented tires.

I laugh every time I see some farkled-out GS at our local hangout that will never see the Alaskan Highway. But hey, it's your money....:rolleyes:

I think I've added enough protection to my Strada that a simple tipover won't produce more than a scratch on the muffler. But I don't ride with the bags. And what fun is it to just buy a vehicle and use it? Some of us like to tinker, and I've yet to have a bike that couldn't be improved.

Zippy I'd love to see a thread of the bikes you've owned, it seems like every time you mention a past bike I'm straight to google cause its such a beautiful bike I need to see another picture of one or its something I've never heard of and want to look up what it is.

I have owned a f650gs, ridden many f800s... None of those bikes were are as dialed in as the Hyperstrada. Because I was coming mostly from sport bikes (triumph Daytona 675 se), the HS worked much better for me.
I did grease the bags and they come off easier. Still not a fan of the bags. As I mentioned earlier, I bought the Ducati Belleview adapter and will mount Givi Trekker panniers.

To the GS bashers, I do a lot of riding in Baja and I've come across GS's while on my Husky in terrain that was a challenge even for the Husky. And I can tell you from experience that a 1000mi trip with half of it dirt is a hell of a lot more comfortable on the GS than could be on a hyper. Nonetheless, I enjoy the hyperstrada a lot especially on weekend canyon rides. There really is no do it all bike that shines in every area so I got the GS for commuting, touring, and adventure riding, the hyper for commuting and sport, and the Husky for dual sport rides

The GS is an amazingly capable bike and very fast - people underestimate them. Only 525lbs wet which is not bad for its size and payload ability.

The Hyperstrada/motard is a completely different bike. More like a short term tourer and more nimble for hooligan riding.
