I just picked up a Hyperstrada 939 at a crazy good deal because I guess they're going away. I've been wanting one since they came out in 2013 and finally got the money together.

I've got a 05 Ducati Monster with a 100,000 miles on it that will be moving on to a gentler calmer rider.
I write about all my moto adventures in a blog. https://motocynic.wordpress.com/

This site has been great for answering my questions so far.
Great to be here!

Monster 620? My old ride. 100,000 miles? Jesus that is a lot of valve work!

Yeah, I did switch in a 695 engine when the clutch went at 75,000 miles so that at least gave me 7500 between adjustments.
I am looking forward to the 18k now though!

18k is nice! And 9k on oil.

My dealer argued with me for about 15 minutes on the phone that the HS couldn't possibly have 9,000 mile oil change intervals. I bet a lot of people don't read their manual and are convinced by those guys that every 3,000 is a good idea. It's $275 for an oil change at Erico and about $800 for valve work. Over 18000 miles thats a savings of about $3k. ...Enough to convince me to upgrade to the HS, in addition to all the other reasons it's just a better bike. I'll always love the classic Monster styling though.. the newer Monsters? No thanks.

One interesting thing worth noting is during a discussion with my local ducati tech, he mentioned the 'track' service schedule, which is far more rigorous than the 'street' 9k/18k service intervals. He mentioned something like cutting the intervals in 1/2 or even 1/4. I wonder if that was real, or something he pulled out of his ***.

Yeah the service savings will be awesome, and my 620 is a prettier bike. I want to keep it, but I'm running out of room in the garage. Plus a friend really wants it so I'll let her go.

Well I won't be taking mine to the track more than a couple of times. When I do I might work in an extra oil change, but I'm not sure I'd worry too much about the valves... Plus I'm slow compared to most track attendees.

It's kinda shocking how many people overlook the fact that it's 9000 miles OR 1 year for those oil changes. It's not good for an engine to sit for long periods of time with old acidic oil.

That being said, it's cheap for me to do two extra oil changes per 9000 mile service since I do my own work. I ride the **** out of my bike, it sees redline at least every time I ride it. And it was a demo bike before I bought it, so I know it has had the **** pounded out of it it's entire life. With that being said, I'm going to be checking the valves this winter at 15k, just to be safe. Intervals after that I'll probably push out to 18k.

Well there's no way I can go a year and not cover 9k Miles, I was thinking of getting the oil tested at 6k and see how it looked.

I refuse to listen to oil nerds... It's 9,000 miles or bust. If I get to 2-3 years on the same oil (unlikely) then I'd consider it. Then again I mostly ride like a reasonable person, there is no need to ever redline this bike unless you are at the track.. plenty of power!

I ride mostly near redline. The chicks dig it.

Sounds a lot like my clueless nephew, who managed to run a perfectly decent MuZ Skorpion he borrowed from me into the ground in less than a year. That was after he did the same to an SV650 I'd found for him. As an retired M.E. who did extensive testing and dealt with warranty and recall issues, I have a bit of sympathy for mechanical things. I don't take my anger out on a bike. But then I've never bought one that (at the time) I intended to sell!

Mine gets it's neck wrung pretty much every time I ride it.
It's well maintained and gets fresh oil every 4500miles.

So you're one of those guys that makes buying used bikes a terrible idea :)

Hey man, might as well ride the piss out of it. What's the point saving it for the next guy? :D That said, I take very good care of it from a maintenance perspective and expect it to last a long time as long as Ducati designed the engine properly...
