Loose Weight

I still appreciate my hypermotard sp, especially after finishing the suspension work to match my weight and riding. I do wish she had a little more grunt, especially in the upper end. My thoughts were to switch over to a 520 conversion to include a superlite sprocket carrier and an alloy rear sprocket down to 42T for a little more top end extension in the middle gears. This conversion would also reduce weight where it counts-while turning, and having a quick-change carrier makes changing rear sprockets a breeze compared to stock.
I'd also like to shave off more weigh if possible. Since she's not being used to carry a pillion, no need for the passenger footrests. But looking at the rear sets, the support for the footrests seems way over-kill. They look like they weigh a ton. I've looked into some adjustable rear sets, but they seem very pricey. Has anyone done any of the above mods, or anything else to lighten their hyper?

I posted up the actual weight loss of the 520 conversion you specifically mentioned. It's not that old of a wright up, should be easy to find. Also took a pound off my flywheel(also just made a post about that recently too). The 520 conversion makes a noticable difference as does the flywheel. Wheels would be another noticable mod. Rotating mass will be felt far more than dead weight. A lithium battery will also drop a good amount of weight (you guessed it, I made a post about that as well) . Dig around, you will see all kinds of options. Some good and some bad. Thw best bang for the buck

Flywheel.

If you have the money find some forged and/or magnesium wheels. Going to cost $800-4000.

Great, thanks. Yes, the hyper sp came stock with the mags, so that's taken care of, but definitely looking forward to the 520 conversion and quick-change rear sprocket.

If anyone has experience with a 42T rear, please share your input.
Thnx!

Those sp wheels are forged aluminum. There are also magnesium wheels out there as well as carbon fiber. I believe I dropped over 2lbs with the 520 conversion with aluminum quick change carrier. I went down 1 tooth in the front as opposed to going up in the rear. Some people go down 1 in front and up 1 or 2 in the rear.

This website will give you the specs for what the gears will do to your top end as well as what each gear limits.

Yeah thanks, love that site! I'm going in the opposite direction with 3 down in the rear and keeping the front 15t as stock. I have seen a 16t for the front, but I'd rather have the ability to change out the rear only as its more efficient depending on application. For very tight twisties the 14t front or 47-48T rear will work great. But for long sweeping turns, and long rides in general, I'd like a little more rpm range on top (42t). I guess the only other item would be to find out if the 42T rear will still work with the 107+1 chain, gearing commander seems to say yes.

Exhaust is a substantial weight saver. The Akra compared to stocker was insane. I did full titanium so the header reduction was big too

The passenger rear set supports are ridiculous. Buying a rearset package with passenger pegs is very costly. I just removed the pegs from the supports ...they rattle a lot anyway.

Thanks gat, agree on the exhaust and I also went the akra route, but not the header. I do wish the passenger support columns were bolted on separately. Now where did I put that hacksaw.....
