I thought I would share my new handlebar setup with you all.
The purpose was to remove the nasty cheap plastic hand guards, and replace the handlebar with a narrower tapered version.
The mirrors are a popular ebay item from Taiwan and include LED turn signals. They have no connectors so I had to extend the wire by 100mm and add a Rizoma Ducati adapter wire so as to plug into the Ducati wiring harness inside the fairing. I then used heatshrink to tidy up the wire and joins. The indicators just worked with no load resistor, but I left the back indicators standard. (I'm not sure if Hypers are smart enough to work with LEDS all around.)
The tapered bars are thicker in the middle (obviously) so require the Rizoma 60mm risers. This makes them slightly lower than the standard Hyperstrada bars (maybe about 25mm) as it removes the extra 30mm spacer which does not play nice with the Rizoma risers. In reality I didn't really notice the height difference, and it makes it the same height as the Hypermotard.
The bars are 720mm wide so are narrower than the standard 800mm bars. This feels a little odd at first but in reality they are a more normal width and are better in traffic. Hopefully they will be OK on the dirt.
To fit the controls requires some careful measurement and drilling of locating holes for the throttle and switch assemblies (so they don't slip around). Others have simply removed the plastic pegs in them rather than drill the bars, but I wanted to do it properly. Apart from that the bars fit the standard mounting holes on the top tripple clamp and Rizoma supplies some longer socket head bolts that are the right length. You do need three arms to torque the mounting bolts up and hold the risers in place, so you should plan for that.
An alternate approach could be to use Hypermotard SP bars which I _think_ are tapered 800mm black bars. You would also need the Hypermotard SP risers and top clamp for the thicker bars, but these should work with the 30mm spacers. I have not verified this so you would need to check on a bike before ordering the parts. More expensive but not stupidly so, and al least all the holes will be drilled already.
One catch with the mirrors is that they are both M10x1.25 right hand thread. The RHS Ducati mirror is left hand thread. So for this reason I need to replace the front brake clamp / mirror mount with a Rizoma version (BS770B) that has right hand thread.
In the photo you will see that I have an iPhone mount on a RAM ball mount off the handlebar clamps, and a USB power outlet under this running off the GPS power plug also inside the fairing.
