Mounting heated handgrips on the Hypermotard

Hi. Just wanted to recommend all Hypermotard-owners to mount the standard heated handgrips from the Ducati dealer (part code 97980161A) instead of some 3-party stuff. The display is pre-configured for the expansion so you won't get any ugly-*** extra switch thet has only 1 level or something like that. Actually you just push the start-switch a chosen number of times to select different warming levels. I live in Norway, so it's a great addition to extend the season a couple of weeks.

No, I don't work for Ducati. ;)

I have Oxford grips on mine and they're wired using the Ducati grip connectors behind the headlight, as is my TomTom sat nav, the wiring is all there along with the male connectors that you can splice into the 3rd party grips without touching the OEM wiring.
The heat control using the start button works as it should and it shows it on the display too

Wish I'd done this when I 1st bought the bike back in 2013, the Ducati grips where on back order for over 6-9 months. So just waited and rode through winter with cold hands b4 they were eventually fitted. I'd have saved a lot of money and had warm hands.

No complaints with the Ducati heated grips though, they work well, but if they ever do fault, I know I'll be buying the Oxford grips next time.

Yup, this is what I've done and it works great. Over 5k miles and still just as trouble free as the day I put them in. $45 for parts, $20 for the dealer to enable them in the ECU.

Will I need to have the dealer tell the Ecu the grips are there, or will it detect them? I have a set in my cart, just waiting till I need another part first

Dealer needs to turn them on. The one closest to me wanted $50 (half an hour of labor) to do it, so I took it to a different one that only charged $20.

well after four years and 18500 miles, my left heated grip stopped working today.
I pulled the bike apart to check the wiring, found the left heated grip had an open circuit, compared to the right which was reading 7ohms. I had voltage going to both the grips approx. 6.5 volts.
I dug a little deeper and found I could easily remove the rubber grip from the plastic, revealing the heater element, I couldn't see anything wrong with it at first glance, so took a magnifying glass to it. I eventually found the hairline break.
Quick trip to Maplin's electronic shop for some circuit board paint, same stuff I used to repair car heated rear screens with all them years ago. A few coats of this stuff and there working as good as ever.
If they go again, I'm going to remove the heater elements chuck them in the bin. Then wrap use some thin gauge resister wire (7 ohm length) and solder in.

Where did you guys buy your Oxford grips without the controller? I can only find the complete kits for sale.

So what is the consensus here? Are the less expensive Oxford heated grips actually "better" than the Ducati ones?

I like really HOT heated grips ... and I read reviews saying guys had to "turn them down to LOW" in 30F temps. Most I've used are NEVER enough in temps below about 37F. ... and I can't feel my Gerbing in those temps either. ....
so I need sUPER Hot grips! Which is better? .... and how many Watts do the Oxfords draw vs. the OEM Ducati ones.
Watts matter!

My Ducati heated grips are too hot on high.

They are invisible.

I have Grip Buddies to make the grips thicker, and wear thick Motoport gloves. On medium the grips work well wearing the summer gloves along the 40 degree California coast.

Oxfords draw more watts than the Ducati grips for sure. I was able to pop the dash/lights/grips fuse by using the highbeam, grips on high, at the same time. It did take over 20 minutes of riding like this to finally pop it though, so I have a feeling it was barely over the current limit of the fuse. I can pretty much guarantee that wouldn't have happened with the OEM grips. So that being said, I just make sure to only use the Oxfords on high with the low beam, or just not use the high beam for too long with the Oxfords on high.

I have personally used them with thinner gloves in 30F weather, and they get so hot it's almost impossible to grip them hard because of the intense heat.

I have heated grips on my 2013. I want to change out the Ducati grips for some Renthal grips. Do I need to buy a certain type of grip though to handle the heat? Sorry for the newb question. I've never had heated grips before.

Not sure if this is possible, since the larger diameter of the heater won't work with the grips. As for the rubber though, any grip should be fine with the heat.

The OEM heated grips are moulded to the shape of the plastic/ heater element,
to stop them twisting if you get what I mean.

I second that

I second that experience. I have Oxford grips and the high setting is too hot for me as well. Medium was great for a 250 mile ride with ambient temps in the high 40's.
