muddy wet back!

Hi, I'm loving my new Hyperstrada, but has anyone else found that every time you ride on wet roads (which you get a lot of here) your back gets completely covered in water and mud!:( Design issue me thinks.
Can you get a larger hugger?
I've made a mud flap to fit below the number plate but this hasn't stopped all of it!

Bikes are for riding not cleaning.

My bike was delivered with a full rear mudguard in addition to the hugger; it was the first thing to go when I got the bike home. Its a bit dry and dusty most of the year where I live so I figure I could do without it. I have been through a few rain events and have concluded that the mudguard probably would have kept a bit of road grime off the bike and me. I would probably refit it if I was heading off on a long winter tour.

Hi, when you say full mudguard what do you mean?
Mine has only got hugger. Numberplate does act as mudguard but that's all it's got. That is how it came new. I have made a mudflap to go below number plate but still doesn't stop wet going up my back.
I ride in all weathers as I use bike to get to work and Cornwall's not the dryest place! Nearly 200mm of rain in January so far and it's raining outside now!

Have you seen Rizoma's license plate holder and mud shield? I'msure it's way over priced like all of their stuff, but I like the looks of it and I would think that it would work well for keeping debris from spraying up your back. It's sort of like the BMW style, or the one on the new Monster 1200.

It's called the "arm-side" mount listed in the link below.

I ride rain/wet roads a lot and occasionally I get a little spray on my collar and back of helmet. It can't be that bad as I don't ever find grit and mud caked on my helmet or jackets.

Have you searched 'Hypermotard Hugger'? Pretty sure I've seen a rear oriented hugger that sits over rear-upper quarter, a la BMW GS.

I made my own, but Pyramid Plastics makes some very nice mudguard extensions. They call them Ductails.

There seems to be no place on the rear swingarm to fasten a Multistrada type wheel hugger. Rizoma wants silly money for their stuff!

Hi Zippy49, Have you found that a longer mudguard works?
I have made a mud flap but I am still getting a wet back! Thinking of going out tomorrow with other half following is car to see if she can see where the water is coming from.

You're right about price of Rizoma!! Wouldn't want to pay that sort of money but I need to do something as it's no good as it is my bike jacket will be ruined in no time:(
Wonder if the Multistrada rear wheel hugger works, does anyone know?

I think what you call the Numberplate I call the mudguard. Here is a picture of it off the bike and the rear without it.

That doesn't hang below the numberplate does it? Think that looks the same as mine.

Hmm, that is completely different from the license plate holder on the North American model. I never understood the UK's giant number plates, now they look like a good idea.

But any additional mudflap has to stick out toward the rear a couple of inches to catch the spray. Mine gets 90% of it.

There is no place on the Hyper swingarm to mount a guard like the Multistrada. Rizoma must use the clamp bolts, that seems slightly dodgy.

Zippy, did you mount that little flap hanging below your plate? All I have on my stock plate holder is the lower reflector, with nothing below it.

In the photos below I have used a bit of tape to approximately locate the mudguard. You will note two holes showing below the small number plates we have here in Oz, these holes are where the number plate holder, including the reflector, terminated, so the guard extends about 14cm (5 1/2in) further. I have removed the "X" bracket suited to larger UK/Euro number plates and made a small one to suit my number plate.
Hope this is clear.

Huh. I haven't seen that on any US models. It's a bit ugly but I wouldn't mind having the option.

Yup, made it out of a piece of 1/16" ABS I had laying around. Need to make a bigger one!

If I really wanted to get fancy, I'd make a wooden mold to drape it over with a bit of heat. Would work better with a bit of 'dish.'

Still, I would certainly like one of those UK spec extensions - can any of you UK 821 owners recommend an online source?

Hi, mine didn't come with anything like that! Could do with somthing like that, although i have made a longer mud flap than that and i am still getting mud and crap up my back! Starting to wind me up now!

Easy there, Guy! That extension is almost certainly a Ducati part, look how well it fits. How about asking your dealer about it? Mine is closed today.

Yeah, you can tell by the molded sump for the rear indicators that it's a factory part. If it's more than $10, they're smoking crack, though.

Hard to believe that you can be such a cheapskate and still bought a Ducati... or are you still broke from that? Just kidding!

That thing is probably ten times that much money from the dealer. It's the result of low volume and fairly expensive tooling. But lots of owners probably take them off to put on a 'tail tidy,' maybe one will come up on fleabay or in the forum classifieds.

It's the CF stuff that really seems to be priced to the moon.

I would be broke if I thought everything with a manufacturers label on it must be better than generic alternatives.

I'm certainly not dropping a c-note on a piece of plastic I may never use.

No doubt it is a Ducati part, my Monster has virtually the same part; both on the bikes when delivered new and I am absolutely certain that my Stealer would not have added anything that didn't come standard unless I paid extra plus Tax.
I assume all Australian delivered bikes have them fitted.
