Random Engine Stalling - 2013 Hyperstrada 821

The latest with my Hyper is that it now will not idle. Starts up, runs awesome under throttle and will stall after a few seconds at idle. This bike is driving me nuts!

If you figure it out, please let me know. Perhaps whatever is messing up your idle is also related to our stalling issues.

I wish I had more time to dig into this, but I just don't.

My bike do something like this. But I had different scenarios.

First time: around 80mph, just lost power, I ride to the side of the road, not clutch, the throttle does not responds, but the engine did not stall/died. When I stop, clutch, the engines died. Turn off the key and turn on again, it started. No issues again

Second time: ahhh, I think it was 4 months later, same scenario. Just the same.

Third and fourth time: this time was on the city. The lights goes green, I tried to move and the engines stall. This time I was on clutch, so the engine did not stay idle. Stop the bike, turn off and turn on, start, that is ok. Minutes later, making a turn on a street, it stalls again. Same thing.

I did go to dealer, Texa reader and nothing, no one errors.
We open the throttle controller, all fine. The bike did not register any error at all.

5th time: again on the road(this time was 22pm and 25°C, the other times was day, temperature around 34°C)
The engine stalls, I tried to twist the throttle to make some tests and the engine is back. Seconds later the issue come back and I decide to pull over. Turn off the key, turn on the key, start the engine. All cool. It drives me crazy.

Anyone had think about gas pump issue, maybe?

The most of time, if I stop the bike the engine stay in idle, even I twist the throttle and just back to normal after turn off the key. Twisting the throttle I can hear the engine's sound change, trying to work but with no power.
I already have this issue on a Honda XRE300. The gas pump lost pressure and the symptoms are quiet the same.

I am think about test the pump pressure and flow rate

Hey fellas, my bike did it again a couple times today.

I could detect that engines stall when I shift down de gears. When I press the clutch it dies.

I will disconnect the side stand sensor tomorow and try a little. Hope be that! #fingerscrossing

Mine hasn't done it since it got colder here. Only happens in 26°C or hotter.

Full/empty tank hasn't made a difference so far.

I recently had some stalling issues with my 15 HS. On deceleration coming to a stop it would stall. Happened a few time. Also on a couple of occasion on acceleration. But I believe my issue might be different.
I was running my bike stock without the o2 sensors. So it was running rich all the time. Reinstalled the o2 sensors and unplug the battery to reset the cpu. My bike is back to normal and have not had a stall since. Currently looking into mod to help with the surging and diving on constant throttle. I am planning on adding a potentiometer on the o2 sensors as a voltage divider to make the bike think it is running lean. Anyway,, just want to share my experience with stalling.

Anyone have any updates on their stalling issues? I am still in the same boat, will start and idle now but will randomly just shut off at zero throttle input or when giving a bit of gas on and off. I can get it to duplicate with the bike sitting still. Thinking fuel pump is a possibility.

I was think about gas pump too. Or the throttle system.

A couple months ago I took the bike to the dealer shop to change fluids and ask for solution. The mechanic made some tests and said it could be the battery. Because the voltage was lower than the expected. As he said, the battery was the original still, about 7 years of work.

So, we changed the battery and until now, no more stalling. (But it used to have engine erros and light sometimes, he said it could be the battery too. It stopped, but happened again one or two times, no problem in the last 30 days)

I also just replaced the battery, no difference for me.

If the problem persists, I would try to read the throttle system, it is a potentiometer. It can have a fail in the trail, or something.
And read the gas pump too. If it have fail in the flow

毫無頭緒的突然熄火。

遇到路面的彈跳變化會導致 ECU 振動並失速。

我在ECU和座墊之間用了一塊海綿,問題就解決了。

Hello there

Bike gone to service just for a oil change. The mechanic did the scanning and this was the ERRORS from ECU:

Do I right to think that the throttle/stalling problem could be a bad wire? Maybe lack of contact. Or the ground wire loose in somewhere.

The translations:

1. APS (TPS - throttle position sensor - circuit-breaker on grounding OR open-circuit)

2. APS (Side Stand Sensor - wrong sinal) this one I disconnected to do some tests

3. Centralina (ECU - protection Reset)

4. Temperature Sensor - (circuit-breaker on positive OR open-circuit)

Hi There, i feel like my HS has the same issue.

imagine i am cruising down the road on 4th gear, approx 90-100kmh, about 6000rpm, the bike jerks a little, and then throttle becomes not responsive, i glance down quickly and i see the RPM drops and stays at 1000rpm, i tried giving it some throttle, and i can hear some whine but no power.

so now i lost power, and losing speed in the middle of the highway,1 of 2 things may happen.
1. i continue to give it some throttle a few more turns and the bike comes back to live and jerks strongly to the front, and i have power again and the bike works normally.
2. or if i continue to give it some throttle and no response, im about 60kmh now, so i pull in my clutch, and i see the RPM goes to 0 and dies, i have to stop, shift to neutral and it starts again.

i also noticed this happens much more frequently if the bike is properly warm, if i rested the bike a bit, it doesnt happen for 20-30km, then it happens again.

has anyone encountered the same? and was it ever resolved? how?

i bought the bike used, i fitted a new battery, new air filter, changed oil and oil filter.
no error shown on dash.

according to kaikai, when met with bumpy roads, it knocks on the ECU causing it to lose power, he stuck a piece of foam between the ECU and the seat, and the problem went away.

has anyone tried this method and resolved the engine stopping during riding issue as i mentioned above?

Hey there

That is E-XAC-TLY what happens to me too.

I was breaking my head thinking about what could cause this. I can hear something when I twist the throttle, IDN, something on the engine, but no response, no power.

Anyway, someday I think "hey, what about the sidestand sensor?"

It could be bad connection, or some wire interrupted, or just malfunction of the sensor.

So, a day last year I just disconnected the sensor, put a balloon and some tape to insolate from water and since then, never happened again.

Maybe it could be the cause, maybe not. I just know that I never connected it again.

thank you for the quick response.

so you deactivated the side stand sensor and the problem went away?
will it have any errors shown on the dash?
do you know if there is a video to guide how to do this?

this is my first ducati, so i need a lot of help.

No errors since then. No lights, no power loss, no nothing.

There is a connector on the left side of the bike, right in the truss.

You can find it following the wire from sidestand. Just umplug it.

Oh! Off course! I almoust forget it. You have to do a jumper, ok?

greatly appreciated, i will try it and update here in the thread if it solves the problem

Just an update here after 3 weeks and 1500KMs.
i was suffering from irregular jerkings while cruising, and also engine dying in the middle of the highway.
i unplugged and shorted the sidestand sensor ( as recommended by OP @EricTostes) , i'm happy to say the problems went away. now the engine runs smoothly all the way to redline, and its smooth during bumper to bumper crawls, imagine 3rd gear, constant 4500rpm - 5000rpm)

So if anyone encountered something similar i posted above, give it a go, the results were immediate, i only rode longer just to verify the problem is solved.
