Side bags Locking mechanism replaced under warranty!

My left side bag would not come off. I took it back to NPR Ducati near Athens Ga and Daniel the technician took the bag off from the locking mechanism and spent over an hour trying to get the mechanism to work without success. He had it so that it could be reattached to the bike but it would not lock! A call to the Ducati regional rep. left us with " we haven't heard about this before" I have seen it on this forum and it is obviously a problem. The owner of NPR has a demo Hyper and just last week while taking a trip lost his bag and watched it bounce down the road behind him!! The locking mechanism will be replaced under warranty and hopefully that will take care of it, but be aware that it is a problem and potentially could launch your side bag off the bike as you are riding! Anyone else having issues with the lock? Seems like an overly complex design to me. The locks on the Multistrada are simpler and more effective.

You will find many posts about sticking latches on this forum. A shot of WD-40 fixed mine.

There is a silicone spray that works much better than wd-40 because wd is mostly a degreaser & not a lubricant. The silicone spray that I use can be purchased at Lowes Home Improvement & works AMAZINGLY on everything that moves. Wd-40 was used on another motorcycle key lock i had & it caused the mechanism to lock up permanently.

The problem is not the key lock itself, but the locking 'jaws'. Since my bags stay in their box 99.9% of the time, I am not worried. But yes, WD-40 is not really a lubricant but rather a Water Disperser.

On a semi-related issue: the zippers broke on my 4 month old HyperS's right saddlebag and the top case broke. I had the dealer replace the bags under warranty. They had no problem getting their Duc rep to give in because the dealer felt it was a "functional failure" I said "If a hinge or latch broke on a Multistrada's case, would there be any issue"? It pays to have a good relationship with your dealer.

I'm mos surprised the left saddlebag zipper isn't broken yet because I use it the most. I fully expect I'll be making more claims on the bags because of the zipper before my warranty is out.

Don't think I am making myself clear. They were not "sticky" the locking mechanism is broken. Daniel the tech took it off, took it apart and showed me how the spring was not functioning. Didn't simply need lubrication.

I had the same problem with fixing the side panniers, the lock did not lock so the bags kept releasing while locked when pulled easily. Put some grease and so far ok yet the lock seem bad engineered, weak and always have the feelings the bags will fly as I often drive very bumpy roads. I am looking for some sort of way to add another overlock sort of tying the bags the bags in case the mounted bag locks fail .

My dealer had similar stories of bags bouncing down the highway but, never saw a member on this forum admit this.

The zipper post above worries me. Between my helmet and daily gear, the zipper seams on my bags are stretched in a few places. I submitted a claim with my local dealer- mostly for the faded fabric -with no response. Haven't tried my original dealer but as there's no functional failure, probably no dice.

When I bought the bike the dealer gave me some advice which has been valuable: When you put the bags on, give them an upward tug to make sure they're locked in place. If they're sticking it's hard to tell if they're really locked in place.

When I first got them they were very hard to remove and put on. A little dry lube on the bag mounting plates solved this. I use the bags all the time - lubed twice - and have had no issues. There seems to be a lot of elaborate solutions but I think they're overkill. Basically the mounting works via a wedge principle - wedges can stick and lube prevents this.

Once I had to use graphite lube in the cylinder when it was getting squeaky and felt a little tight. More preventative than anything else. I ride in the rain so this is to be expected.

I hope Ducati replaced the OP's broken bag.

Had my bike not quite a month and thought I'd have a play with the panniers, taking them on and off ect. Only to discover the left side pannier will not budge. Taking the bike in for its first service on Tuesday, so I will let you know how I get on. Cheers Peter

Took my bike to Ducati Brisbane today for its first service and explained about the left pannier being stuck. Apparently the key barrels had been put in on the wrong sides. At least I can get the left side off now, however it takes a fair bit of effort and is nowhere as easy as the RH side. I have put plenty of graphite powder on the locks and holders, so will see how that goes.

BS alert!

No way are the lock cylinders themselves 'handed.' What about #3, intended for the accessory rear bag? The ones on my bags are identical; they even turn the same way to lock/unlock. The dent next to the slot is the same, too. One way on one side, reversed on the other. Sounds as if your dealer is giving you the runaround.

Welp, mine are crap and the bike is a brand new 2015. Won't unlock and won't release the key in the locked position. Not the right way to start a romance. Well one works, but not the way the manual says. It locks horizontal. The other is just crap and doesn't lock at all.

Spray lubricant. WD 40 may penetrate and get the lock to release, but a good spray lubricant will provide lasting easy function.

I have a new 2015 as well and had the same problem. I used WD 40 and it is really smooth now.

I just swapped the locks on a new set I bought off a member. Sounds like somebody changed or messed with the locks in your latches, though my lock sets would only fully seat in the correct, horizontal position. You should take them apart and play with them. Keep one set together as a reference and be careful when you disassemble as all the parts like to explode outward.

I also found that if the backing plate that holds all the guts in place loosens, one of the two springs will dislodge and the lock freezes, usually in the locked position. One of the screw posts stripped out on my new set that holds the backing plate in place and it keeps freezing in the locked position. The posts are plastic with tiny screws and just weak sauce.

Seriously?

Almost like weird fate, I just replied to this thread to other day and now my left bag won't stay locked on. Goes on perfectly, slides right in, turn the key and take it out. Bam, bag slides right off while the bag is locked. Hope my shop is open tomorrow!

And if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go buy the Givi V47.

So they tried to fix the locking mechanism on the bag. That did not work. They submitted to Ducati to replace it, and Ducati asked them to first take a whole bunch of measurements of the mounting brackets before they'd replace it. About an hour of me sitting around the dealership. We will see where this goes.

Wd40

For all those folks using WD40...
Sure it works fine for initial use, it penetrates well and offers some lubrication. However, it is not intended for long term use as a lubricant. Do yourself a favor and squirt some silicone or dry lube in there.
