My hyperstrada has 5,400 miles on it and just started slow starting. The best explanation I can put together is that I hold the start button and the bike turns over repeatedly, but nothing happens. Eventually it starts or either I release the button and hit it again and the bike starts.

Please help.

Supposedly the starter is pretty weak. Mine got that way around 9,000 miles. Even better- It's a costly part to replace due to it's location.

I had the same problem. Previous owner let the battery discharge and so became weak. Could not put out the proper amps.
BAttery voltage dropped from 12.5 idle to 9.5V while cranking.
This situation eventually damaged the starter clutch.
I bought a new battery and had the starter clutch changed under warranty. It's been a month now and she starts within two cranks.
The battery voltage does not drop below 11V or so while cranking.
I don't know if this will last though.

I came to the conclusion that Ducatis need to have the electrical system in top notch condition because they are high compression and use smaller batteries than normal to save weight and space.

If the battery is discharged or the connections become corroded or the starter motor brushes weaken, then cranking takes longer than necessary which in turn might weaken or damage other components like the starter clutch.

There are a lot of threads regarding the starter motor - check them out - there might be an answer for you. It's a known issue.
