Ducati 698 Hypermotard RVE – First ride review:
(Recent bikes include KTM 1098 and KTM 890R)
Bike is 10 months old and has 2k miles on it.

First thing to notice is the poor fuelling under about 5k revs. Pulling away is snatchy and not pretty.
Once you get the hang of balancing the clutch and using the right gear (it’s fussy about the gear!), it’s much better. But rather lets it down. Sport mode around town is particular fun!

The bike over 5k revs is like a different machine! The power delivery is smooth and the pull is a joy.
This half of the rev range is a bike Ducati can be proud of. Until the fuelling gets sorted, I’ll plan my rides accordingly to avoid stop-and-start town riding.

The front brake—wow! It's a tiny bit more urgent than recent bikes, but it has loads of stopping power. I even felt the back brake working well, too.
There were a lot of wet leaves around, so I didn’t try the ABS!

The handling felt nice and confident inspiring, better than I expected.

Scrolling through the settings is a bit cumbersome, I couldn’t seem to exit a setting/menus easily, maybe I should read the book!

On delivery the bike cranked well but wouldn’t start, it took a few attempts. It seemed better during the day, but not as I would expect.

I’ve had some Ducati sports bikes and understand they have some special noises, but this engine noise is not great when riding. You don’t notice it when revving at a standstill, but on a run, the ‘ticking noise’ is grating after a while. I’m told this is the desmo valvetrain, more like a bag of spanners. However, to be sure I’m back to the dealer this week to compare riding noises with another 698 they have, they can also take a look at the starting issue.

For me, it’s a fun bike, for me to get my ‘fix’ in short rides and seek out those B roads around here.

I’m just hoping the noise issue is just my bike and can be fixed, otherwise some loud exhausts may be needed!

Thanks for that and I'm glad your post got through eventually. As we know already, there's a bunch of tweaks Ducati need to do in the next iteration of the 698. Judging by the news on the latest V2 motor, desmo will soon be a thing of the past so valve trains will be quieter and need less attention. A little of the magic is lost...

I went out today for about a 25-mile short ride, and for the middle section of the ride, the noise wasn't there! I was flapping my legs around and bending down and it wasn't there. Then after a few miles, it was back, especially noticeable on deceleration.
Even stranger now the noise is variable!
How the hell do you exit any of the menus? Holding the top slide button downwards seems to do nothing.
I've had a few Ducati sports bikes in the past and I'm getting that same feeling of doubt about the bike - I should have learned by now!

Some of the bike's noises are not engine related. My front "cowling" (number plate thing) buzzes a bit, as does something on the tail, but it is variable for sure. My KTM 690 used to shed fasteners, related parts, and flap license plates in half. The 698 seems like minded. The right hand screw for my seat buzzed out twice before I put orange thread locker on it. I'm also down a screw on my exhaust pipe heat shield.

RTFM on the menus. It works. You have to hold the button down for a couple of seconds to back out of a menu, but sometimes it might be looking for you to hit enter (turn signal cancel). You also can't back out of the top level menu.

The noise is definitely from the engine.
The bike goes back next week. I'm done with it. You can hardly hear yourself think over the damn 'ticking'. Bye 698!

And they'd been waiting for months to find someone to take it off their hands! ;)

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. I'd try a twin Hyper if I was you. They are pretty well sorted by now.

The ticking noise is normal, mine has it too. You can here it also in many YT onboard vids.

From my own research, it seems variable at best—barely audible to unacceptable in my case. In this video, at the 5 minute mark, you can hardly hear any rattling. Mine would have dominated the soundtrack! (Useful gadget on review).

I collected my brand new 950 SP Hyper - wow! If anyone has been in two minds and is undecided about which to choose, please be sure to test ride a 950. Much better IMHO fuelling - like miles better!! Pulls and feels like a motorcycle.

Glad to hear you've now got a Hyper that hits the spot. The 698 Mono would be an interesting addition to a collection but I reckon the best Ducatis have two cylinders like the four I enjoy: 821 Hyperstrada, 916 ST4, 904 Cagiva Gran Canyon and 600+ Cagiva Alazzurra! The 750 and 996 Monsters didn't quite do it for me. :)

Hell, if you want to hear some serious effing "clacking", try a KTM 690! The 698 purrs by comparison. :)

I've had 2x 690's without anything like as much engine noise. Also had KTM's - 625 (new), 1290 and a 890R. The 890R did have a noise. The cam chain sounds like it going to come through the case for the first minute or two, until the tensioner filled with oil pressure.

Beginning to get the impression that your used 698 had been ridden hard and put away wet, before you bought it.

Did your 890 also have cheese cams, or did you get lucky? I bought a manual cam chain tensioner for my 690, based on the bad rep of the stock hydraulic unit, but I didn't end up installing it.

Defo think my 698 had a very hard 2k miles before I got it. I was still concerned the demo bike I tried with only a few hundred miles had the same thing developing! No KTM cam issues to report. The cam chain noise on the 890R would be ok after an oil change and with oil topped to the highest level on the glass. After about 3 months it would get noisy. I also looked at the mechanical adjusters, they are quite pricey over here. I may have fitted one if I'd kept it. I regret selling the 1290 (2020) but a different style of riding and I feel you need a destination to ride to, as it eats up the miles. Even the 950 Hyper I feel I can just go out for a play and head home. Also, I'm not sure how long I'd keep my license on the 1290, Way too fast! The 950 SP despite its price tag is really hitting the spot for me so far (though it has started to snow today here in good old South Blighty). Pic of first 690 below (early one) and new 950 SP

I can't get over the design of so many (Ducati) bikes with next-to-no front mudguard. All that precious motor, not to mention radiators, to get covered in sh-one-t! At least the 'Strada has a decent mudguard to which one can add a CF extender. Of course, all Italian roads are pristine and it never rains there...

Mine does just about everything yours does, except the noise and starting. Mine fuels better between 3500 and 5000, but it's not entirely happy there. It bucks and jumps at 2500 until you give it a fist full of throttle and then pulls away quite satisfactorily. There is no way that engine is running a lambda of 1 and bucks and jumps like it does.

The pages and pages of settings are rediculous. I carry the manual.

Get some auto weatherstrip adhesive to glue in your seat grommets.

I bought a little 14l tail bag from Cortech to carry mail and "stuff". Very handy.
