Sudden cut out

So after 9 months of (reasonably) happy ownership (the flaky starter motor is annoying) with the 'strada, I had my first dodgy situation last night; riding hope from work, on an dark/unlit country road, 45mph mid corner, and the engine suddenly dies.

I didn't have the 'disco' effect on the dash (just the oil light stayed on), but what was really dangerous was the lights cutting out. Not fun. Once I pulled over, cycled the ignition and started her up again, she was fine, and was fine on the journey in today.

Thankfully, she's in for service/warranty work next week, so wanted to check the the experts if this is symptomatic of the TPS issue so I can report it?

No, not yet. Hoping to get it done next week - it would be nice if I could attribute what happened (with confidence) to a specific issue - the guy who runs the shop is a little grumpy in my experience so I want to make sure I've all my bases covered!

That does sound rather dangerous. I had my share of electrical and dealer-related issues with my previous, 2013 Strada. This included the dash being replaced twice, ECU and and ignition coils being replaced once, etc.

The one time when I had a similar issue to yours was when the while bike went black, but the engine kept running until I turned the bike off. Still, the engine never cut out, so yours sounds different. In my case, though the dealer replaced the dash (and took a month to do it), I think the real reason was a blown fuse when I hit the high beams, possibly because of shoddy installation after the headlights were replaced by the same dealer.

I can't offer a definative answer - it's possibly the tpu. Did you notice a softening of throttle response, increased backfire on decel, oddly muted engine sounds prior to the event?

For TPU replacement they have to check the part number - if it's a suspect unit they have to replace it - the point being you don't have to have symptoms - they have to replace it. You mentioned a grumpy mechanic - not necessarily a bad thing unless he's also uncooperative. Checking the TPU takes about 5 minutes - see if they'll do that while you wait - if not - it might be good to have a plan B.

I think there's a thread on hyper problems - that could give you a sense of common issues. Ignition coils are one of them. In fact, I remember a thread by a guy who had a cut out and crashed. Can't remember the resolution. Let the hunt begin...

Yes!! Only a few seconds prior, but she definitely went soft before she died!!

Thanks for all the responses guys.

Lights Out?

Yesterday I went to start my Strada 900 miles on the clock and the engine just died and all power was off. I took the seat off and checked wires under the seat then replaced the seat and Voila it was started and running.

Next rest stop it did it again and I removed the seat checked the wires and Voila I was ready to ride home.

Just wondering if this is common and what is the issue?

My guess would be a loose connection. Check all electrical connectors in that area including the battery.

So, did you ever figure out the reason for the sudden cutting out? I had it happen just this Friday twice. I was on the throttle slightly both times but at lower rpms. The first time, I thought I just didn't give enough gas but the second time, it died while the clutch was fully in, just before I started to accelerate from the lights.

do you know an errorcode ? would be interesting if an error is logged within ecu.

When mine was very new and before any recall fixes, it would commonly stall when I was accelerating and changing gears, typically between 4th, 5th and 6th. After the TPU swap, never happened again.

I didn't have loss of power associated. That was a completely different problem, re: limp mode.

What do you mean with TPU ? Is this the drive-by-wire part in the throttlegrip ?
