Took a spill

I target fixated mid turn, hit the brakes, slowed down a lot, and I think my intent was to ride onto the grass at the side of the road in order to stop and take a breather and get my head on straight. Only recent heavy rain had made the grass wet and muddy and down I went. I still am not sure exactly what I was thinking, but from watching the GoPro video of it, I could have totally changed my line and navigated the turn without incident. My buddy watch his video of me and said it looked like I rode off on purpose. Maybe I did. I don't remember. He also said my helmet hit the pavement. My bike and I got pretty muddy. I ended up punching myself in the chest, knocked the wind out of myself, bruised a few ribs, and had the bike between my legs still running as it lay on its side pinning me to the ground.

A couple of guys with the local fire department happened by and stopped. They picked the bike up off me. EMS came. A cop came. I got a "warning" for "unsafe movement" which the policewoman told me I can rip up when I get home, it was just a matter of procedure.

Besides being caked in mud, the only things that broke were the left handguard and the left bag mount that's part of the grab rail. Also the catch for the lowest bag mount broke off the bag. I've ordered the replacement handguard, a new passenger grab rail rack kit, since the whole thing is almost as much as half of it. The catch that's attached to the bag isn't sold separately so I'll need to make a replacement.

My bike does have the Rizoma frame sliders and water pump guard, but it was mud, and though the bike got pretty muddied up (the beak got mud up in its snout), no other parts beyond what broke were damaged. I can't say the same for my ribs.

Glad you turned out okay. Riding off road can be tricky if you don't prepare for it. I am not an offroad rider so I can't really say anything on that even though I have tried.
There was a covered parking area at this place I used to work that I took a spill one time on my DRZ-SM that took me completely by surprise. I usually rode off pavement through a sandy/grassy area into the covered area and one day, while taking my little route that I did all the time, I ended up on the ground in a split second..not idea what happened. i think I probably had some pressure on the front brake while going through the sandy part and that did it

Sorry to hear of your accident and the ribs. I once highsided my YSR50 and broke nine on the right side - six clear through. So I can sympathize!

Ribs are a beeatch to heal. You can't laugh, you can't cough, and a sneeze is totally out of the question. I recommend lots of ibuprofen, it helps reduce the inflammation. Oh wait, you are an RN...;)

Get well soon.

Thanks Tom.
Just so happens I had a cold prior to this incident, and while it was almost cleared up, my new inability to cough up the gunk in my lungs is causing problems. I'll probably wind up with pneumonia because I can't clear it out. Sucks. I'm going to try dangling my upper body off the side of the bed later so I can let gravity do its thing.
