Baltimore md
So recently I was driving through Baltimore MD and was approaching an intersection where I had the green light to turn left. Getting closer to the intersection I was slowing down to let oncoming traffic pass when I noticed a car turn off the intersecting road and into my lane. It was close to dark outside and who knows wtf she was doing but she ended up hitting me head on. She hit me at an angle where, I'm assuming, swiped across my front fork/wheel and hit the bike right at the radiator on the left side. Anyway long story short, the appraisal to repair the bike was around $18k, so her insurance company totaled the bike. I had several aftermarket parts on there (which was most of what was to be replaced by assessment) and I still have the stock parts in the garage. My question is what would you be willing to pay to get the bike back? The only things I think I have to replace are the radiator, and possibly the fans, left foot bracket assembly with shifter, right foot peg and brake lever, and handlebar. Hard to tell without taking damaged pieces off, but the frame doesn't appear to be bent and most of the damage was cosmetic. I had frame sliders on it so they and the handlebars took most of the impact (after the car hit it). The insurance company wants $2300 to sell the salvaged bike to me, and I may be able to get it back on the road for ~$1000. Has anyone ever dealt with this before? Worst case I could part the bike out to get the $2300 back.

Definitely not twisted and the only place I can think it would be bent is behind the radiator, but I don't think it is. I think she just brushed along side of me and took out some controls on the left side. I initially looked at it and couldn't see anything obvious. The frame looks like it's in great condition when it sits upright (without pulling the parts off). But now the bike is no longer in my hands and the insurance company is sitting on it. They are willing to let me go and take another look before I tell them yes or no. I think the bike is repairable, but it will always have a salvage title attached to it and I will never be able to sell (for full value) or trade in. But, I could end up with a Hyper for around $3500 and I loved that bike...

Hard to tell without seeing it in person but $2300 seems pretty reasonable. The wheels and engine look good, that's worth $2300 alone.

What is their settlement offer? I think it's law in most states that the insurance company must pay you current retail value + tax & fees. So in other words, if the same bike is sitting at a dealership used & not wrecked, whatever it costs to get it out the door should be right around what the insurance company owes you.

Assuming it's worth $10k (retail) + sales tax ($500?) - $2300... $8200 in your pocket would go a long way in getting it rideable again.

Don't you get to claim all the add-on's? I remember totaling my father's truck as a kid and he actually made money with claims for headers/exhaust/intake/wheels/etc. I see a lot of carbon fiber on that girl. That could be a really cheap track bike if they don't require a good title.

Also, it would be smart to get the forks checked. Probably OK but I bet any shop would recommend as you did take a swipe to the one tube.

So, do you have a stock rear mud guard/fender to sell? Mines had a chunk missing since an early blow out.

Settlement is just getting to where they are offering me something reasonable and this happened over 4 months ago. They are giving me 12050 for the bike. That includes the helmet, extras, taxes, tags, and the towing bill i paid. They initially said they could replace the bike for $9200 and gave me like 25% towards all the extras that I had receipts for (~3k), so the first offer was $10200. They said the extras didn't add to the value and they didn't have to pay the full value even with receipts. A buddy of mine runs a law practice and I told them to talk to him after the first offer. After months of bs he got them to 12050 and he said I could probably get more but I didn't think it was worth my time to get another 1000 - 1500, plus he was doing it for free and I didn't want to tie up his time. My advice to anyone that has upgrades and extras is to insure your bike for an actual value and not let the insurance decide what it's worth.

Anyway, engine is great condition imo. The only place I saw anything is where the coolant tube connects to the left side, but that's just a case. Wheels have barely visible scratches and have brand new pilot road 4 gts that were installed 2 days prior. Carbon fiber is mostly trashed but under that I can't find much damage.

Good idea on getting the forks checked! They are actually aftermarket Andreani's, but I can't have them checked until I buy it back from Allstate. I'm hoping it missed the tube and I don't have to replace. Also, love the idea of it being a track bike! I do have the stock rear mudguard and may sell, but might be putting it back to stock fairings so idk, I'll let you know gatdammit.

Hello Kknowleswvu

Check your fork stops at the frame (where the handlebars stop at the frame right behind the fork)
Sorry but I can't think of the real name now.
I had the problem with mine 2 months ago and they were bend backwards (frame exchange).
Also check the counterparts thorougly.

I have a stock rear fender if you want it. I should have everything but the turn signals.

I have to say it seems a quite fair deal for the buy-back, especially when you know that particular bike quite well...

I would be concerned about the straightness of both of the fork tubes and what's inside, and the steering stops, as already commented, and the alignment of the steering head.

The head stem bearings have probably taken quite a knock as well; probably a good idea to replace these as a matter of course.

I told the insurance company that I'll buy it back. Just have to start the tear down process to see how bad it is. I'll post pics and update later. Thanks for the advice!
