I can't believe there is a ducati dealer that doesn't offer test rides.

Perhaps you should let Ducati know of this practice, I know that Ducati dealers are supposed to have demo bikes.

They cite being in NY, with high insurance rates, and the number of times someone's taken a demo bike out, crashed, and sued them when they got hurt.

Meanwhile my bike was purchased by the dealer as a DEMO, but never used as one. It had no miles and was never prepped til I bought it.

That this with a grain of salt, as I do not know, but doesn't Ducati absorb some of the cost on the Demo units they send to dealers so that the dealer can offer it for test rides and then later sell it at a loss? If that is true, sounds like that dealer is having it's cake and eating it too.

That wouldn't surprise me at all.
 
Sounds more like a scam than insurance scares. It's pretty easy to get a legal waiver that will put all the responsibility on you. Then all they need is proof of insurance. In fact, the more I think about this...total ********.

I know. It makes me angry.
I wish I'd walked away... more like ridden away. On my 690 Duke, instead of trading it in for something I didn't test ride. I bought the Duke without a test ride, but that was lust and it didn't disappoint. Best riding bike I've owned to date. If it only had ABS I'd have kept it. The new ones have it but don't have the fully adjustable wonderful suspension.

I don't want to buy there again but I'll see if I can voice my dissatisfaction and get them to give me a killer deal. If not, I'll go elsewhere this time.
 
OK, so after a 200mile ride upstate and back I went back to the dealer to give them a piece of my mind. But the dealership was sold and under new ownership. New owners there have no problem with demo rides. So much for voicing my dissatisfaction to influence a better potential deal.

Long story short, I took a 2012 Multistrada Touring S with 6500 miles on it for a ride. Equipped with Ohlins suspension, electronically adjusted via the Sport, Touring, Urban, and Enduro settings.

No thanks.

Yes, the ride in "Urban" was like a Lincoln Town Car. The ride in "Touring" was like a sports sedan. "Sport" was like a sports car. But the bike's big and heavy, with a rear brake that basically did nothing. It didn't like to turn. The windscreen was worse than the Hyperstrada's regardless of where I set it in the five inches or so of height adjustment.

When I got back to the dealer after my test ride they pretty much said they don't want my bike since they have three of them already that they need to sell. Two leftover '13's and a '15. So he said he'd give me whatever the wholesaler he called would give him. I thanked them for the test ride and got back on my bike and rode home.
 
This sure sounds dispiriting. Needless to say selling as winter comes is not the best time - and making a move when you're frustrated could cost you money. I also bought mine without a test ride. It's a bike that asks you to meet it halfway and I wasn't sure I made the right decision. As I've become a better rider I've come to appreciate it.

I still think something is defective on your front end. A wheel bobbing up and down on a smooth road is not how any suspension works. I'd have the wheel balance checked - maybe a weight fell off. I was also just reading how too much torque on triple clamp bolts can screw up the fork action. Maybe re-torque them just to be sure.

If all else fails, next year ktm is coming out with a 1050 - might be worth waiting to check it out.
 
Hmm. Torque, huh? Considering I only torqued them all by hand to the spec of "that feels about right" there may be something to that, in causing stiction or something. Can you post a link to where you were reading about that?

I wonder where I can find the torque specs for those triple tree bolts.
 
Test rode a 2013 MS with an intention of trade-in, but was disappointing. Vibration was the main problem, plus wind protection was not good for such a high priced bike. I felt the 2014 Caponord a lot better.

NurseDaddy, have you tried a Speed Triple. The riding position may be a bit difficult for somebody who are used to HS, but overall very appealing bike to me.

Maybe you should get away from Ducati altogether then. Go ride a BMW or a Honda. Or the new Kawasaki Versys.

My first bike was a Honda. So were my second and third. Then I had three BMWs. One bought right before I left my job at a BMW motorcycle dealer. Then I had a KTM.

On the day I went bike shopping, if I'd ridden the KTM Duke to a Japanese bike dealer first, I'd probably have rolled out on another Honda. But because I felt like another Honda would be a bland sensible choice, I went back to the eurobike dealer where I got the Duke and the BMWs didn't call to me like the Hyperstrada, which at the time seemed like it had everything I wanted in a bike. Like I said earlier, if the dealer let me ride it first I'd have probably passed, maybe taken a BMW out and liked that ride quality more. I dunno.

What I do know is that I am stuck with the Hyperstrada for now, since trading it will mean a huge depreciation hit, plus the remainder of the Duke's loan is rolled into the financing, and anything else I'd consider getting, even a Japanese bike, is gonna run me more money.

For now I'll need to make the best of the Hyperstrada and wait until the spring or something.

For torque rates I get this from a manual:

Fastener retaining steering head to fork (right+left) 10* Nm Tolerance ±10%

Fastener retaining bottom yoke to fork (right+left) 16* Nm Tolerance ±10%

The * indicates critical point for dynamic safety. Tightening torque tolerance must be ±5%.

A shot in the dark but easy enough.

Thanks. I did some reading about it after you mentioned it, and I also paid the fee to download the manual from a site mentioned elsewhere on the forums. I also found the heights were uneven by a very small amount, so I leveled them out and torqued the pinch bolts to spec. I'll see if there's a change in ride quality on tomorrows ride to work.

I'm curious - how is the front suspension issue? Did you resolve it?

It's better, but I hit some giant potholes recently and I think I might have broken something. I only say that because the ride sort of improved afterward, strangely enough, since it got softer. I think a plastic spacer broke. I haven't been riding nor have I had the time to open it up and see, but I'll post back if I open it up and find something.
