Warming up...

Hi gang. Well I've skimmed the owner's manual and I've googled the heck out of the web and can't find the answer. Soooooo, do we need to warm the bike up before riding off?

60-90 seconds is the magic range to get the oil to the the desmos
Just ask Sigma performance

My dealer told me to let the engine reach 125 F before launching on a cold (overnight) engine, which I do religiously. If it's been sitting most of the day, I like to see it register temp (105 F) before I go.

But, hey. I still warm up all my cars...which nobody does anymore.

Once the oil pressure is there supplying oil to the moving parts (which should happen within a few seconds), your goal is to heat up the engine as quickly as possible to bring it to operating tolerances. The more it runs in a cold state you simply burn more fuel and run longer with non optimal clearances. In a car, there's the further issue that idling doesn't warm up your transmission or differential, so if you let it warm up by sitting there you still have to take it easy at first until everything else gets up to speed.

Thanks folks. I'm mainly worried about p*ssing off the neighbours at 6.am! Cheers for getting back so quickly.

its much better for the motor to start it, wait some seconds until it idles well and then drive away with moderate rpms. motor warms up much faster with load (during driving) than without load (at idle).
You will not believe how long motor oil needs to get 80°C so its safe to use high rpms and wot. Even if water ist already warm, oil is not.
Basically you need 10 km to get oil to temps, of course depending on outside temps also.

which I still do, despite letting it warm at idle. Kinda moot on a bike since I learned the cold tires lesson when I was very young. Plus I drive a diesel, which takes fooooorrrrreeeeevvvvveeeeerrrrr to get to operating temp. Things hell during the winter. I get to work before the heat starts blowing.

Ha! I used to leave really early in my old, quite established neighborhood with good people on all sides. My Strada was like a top fuel race booming out of the garage at 0500. They would have slashed my tires if I got a pipe.

Haha yeah, race can might have to wait until I've won the lottery and bought an isolated pad in the stix!

I'm fortunate enough to have neighbors that don't mind all the racket at 6am. My monster sounds like a can of rattling bolts, and my hyper likewise isn't quiet either.

Nope just take it easy at first til it gets warm, like most vehicles.

+1

Carburetors and sloppy manufacturing tolerances are long gone. Fuel injection keeps the mixture right. It is better for the engine to go ahead and ride, nice and easy until you see the water temperature rise to operating temperature. Then, still relatively easy until you know the oil is up to operating temperature.

The water warms first, the oil a little while longer.
