Hey quick question.... does the water pump always run when the engine is running?

Right on. I was just making sure.... mine is NOT currently spinning while engine runs.... I replaced the thermostat thinking that was the bane of my heat issues.... apparently I was not so lucky with that "fix"

It has a plastic gear on the back side . It's kind of like a "fuse". If something else happens in the system the gear strips out to protect the rest of the engine. Buy a new/used pump and it should come with a new gear and you will be good to go.
