Wiring in a 12v charger w/ GPS mounted

Hey everyone!

I am new around here and just picked up my 'strada last weekend. I already have put 400 miles on it and I am in love. Its a definitely a different machine than my Harley.

Anyways I hate to poke at a subject that has been talked about alot but I cant seem to find what I am looking for using the search tool. SO what I want to do is mount my Garmin GPS to my handlebars and have it plugged into the GPS plug in the headlight fairing (switched) and while also having a 12v for my phone. Specifically I want it to look like this set up pictured below. My only problem is I want that to be switched to. Could I possibly wire it into the empty Heated grip harness? (Living in AZ you dont really need them).

Thanks for the reply! But I have not found what I am looking for just yet as most of the guys wire in the GPS to the connector in the housing and there phone get powered straight off the battery. I am trying to switched power to charge my phone so when I turn the bike off the charging port looses power.

I guess I am not being very clear. I know that I can wire the GPS to the plug in the headlight, and I could plug in the extra 12v to the battery. BUT I am looking to see if anyone has attached the a 12v to charge the phone to a relay, or a switch(assuming that the GPS plug in the headlight is used)

You could wire the USB outlet in parallel with your GPS using the same power supply.

Both the GPS and USB outlet require 5v input. Your USB outlet probably has its own voltage regulator. If so, just wire it into the 12v power supply behind the headlight in parallel with your GPS.

Another option would be to buy one of these to plug into the (switched) outlet under your seat:

I sometimes use this - it has built in battery protection. OptiMate USB O-100 - 1000mA USB charger with battery auto protect off, SAE, compact size.

More recently I got one of these: Ravpower iSmart
The hold enough charge for 5 full cycles and I find it more convenient for tank bag usage. So far I've never had to re-charge it on the road.

I actually have a battery pack and love it, use it for camping and backpacking..saves my butt! Thanks for the suggestion.

Glad I could help! I plan to use the same GPS (garmin Nuvi) I already have for my car, on my Hyperstrada too. When I was looking for the parts to make it work, I came across some other cool gadgets like the one's I posted above.

I ordered another GPS power cable that will be wired to the connector behind the head light. Now to mount the Nuvi to my bike with out spending a ton of cash$, I'm thinking about buying a 2nd cradle to zip tie to the top handlebar clamp.

Nice! I actually think I am going to Parallel the power cables from Phone and GPS to the single cable behind the headlight. This way I will still have two more ports free just in-case.

As far as mounts for my Nuvi...I tried cheap ones off of ebay but they vibrate to much and eventually break. I caved and spend the money on Ram mounts. SO worth it. I have them for my nuvi and samsung. They have rubber balls so they soften vibration.
