worth buying extended warranty on new HS 939?

Extended warranties are where they really make their money. If they didn't make money on them, they wouldn't push them so hard.

Statistically most issues show up in the first year or two. This past year has been pretty smooth sailing for me.

By the time your standard 2yr (730 day) warranty is up, all recalls should've been fixed, and you should know if your going to keep the bike long term or sell it. After that, you'll have to decide if you want to pay for high replacement part costs from Ducati or not.. it's the nature of the beast.

Most salesmen try to push the extended warranty on bikes on day 1 of your 730 day warranty period.. because they make commission from it. However the truth is, while your bike is covered under the factory warranty, you can apply for extended warranty anytime at the normal rate.

If you've allowed the warranty to lapse, usually what happens is dealership will perform an out of warranty inspection on the bike to determine if they'll cover your bike or not. Plus, generally the rate is increased because the risk of failures are a lot higher.

If you're maintaining your own bike (doing your own oil changes, tire changes, day to day servicing) then your factory warranty can be null and void depending on if your dealer is a d-bag or if you do it incorrectly. It's a double edge sword and one you've got to be willing to cut from if you handle it incorrectly.

I've been very pleased with having a Zurich extended warranty on my last bike. When the bike was sold I received a refund for the unused term. Zurich paid for a couple expensive repairs and parts that were more than the entire premium.

Reasonably priced extended warranties, with a reputable company, is no different than any other insurance.

I choose to have insurance on most every asset. Vehicles are no different.

A better question may be whether one should consider the VW extended warranty Ducati offers.

personally i have had several repairs done under without me having to pay , even though my bike was over a year past its warranty expiry date.They were mostly done as good will gestures after showing my dealer that the problems were really a manufacturing or design fault .i just pointed out that the forum had lots of instances of each fault and then my dealer put it to ducati ,who agreed to the work.

I'm not sure what the extended warranty's retail prices are but when I bought my HS 939 in January I paid $800 for an additional 3 years. I thought it was worth it as this was my first Ducati and I really didn't know what to expect.

When I bought my 939 last year (also in Ontario) I also got an extended warranty (6 years i think - which in hindsight might've been a tad too long)

my reasons: 1) it was a new engine (no long term reports) and 2) modern engines are beyond my mechanical skill. I'm comfortable with 70's inline 4's and the old 2 valve air cooled ducs.

Every shop/ manufacturer is different, but with car warranties, they will usually go to exhaustive lengths to correlate a modification or non-factory maintenance as the culprit of claim. Who doesn't mod their motorcycle? And before people start quoting the (US) statutes requiring proof that the accessory or mod caused the failure, they can get around it. I had a new Acura, and Honda boned scores of owners via legal jargon or flat out denial.

It's no different than buying an extended warranty on a TV. Statistically, you won't need it. Insurance/ warranty companies are companies, and companies wouldn't be companies if they didn't net a profit. Ever notice how most of those extended warranty policies (for cars, anyway) are ultimately owned by the manufacturer? They make all their money in the service and warranty departments.

I've been substantial money ahead on every extended warranty I've purchased because the cost of replacement parts, and the complexity of the electronics, is so much more than before. But then, I shop well and find a reasonable policy premium and only deal with reputable non-manufacturer insurers, or purchase direct from the manufacturer.

As it relates to a purchase of the Red/VW extended warranty, I have no direct experience. The dealer I work with offers that they have had a very good experience with VW, not that they own Ducati.

As for considering price as the basis for the purchase? Well, so many times you get what you pay for. So many fly-by-night insurers out there.

BTW: On my out-of-warranty starter failure, Ducati paid for the parts and I paid for the $180 labor. Fair treatment.

Nice test ride done, extended warranty is in the cards.

I just bought a used 2013 Hyperstrada. I also opted for the extended warranty, but could only get 2 years. $800 through a company called RPM. Heard of them?

Normally, I would never go for an extended warranty not offered by the OEM.

RPM (never heard of them) were praised by my dealer. I've used Zurich before, but never had a claim, also used Western, no claims.

Why did I buy extended warranty:
This bike has close to 20K miles (!!!) so I figure with that mileage it may not be a bad idea to be covered. I asked my dealer if there was anything on the bike that could void the warranty for ANY reason ... he said NO.

It's got a Termi pipe, only other mods are suspension front and rear. (Andriano fork kit) Bike runs great. Warranty is a LOT of money but if something craps out I'd like to be covered.

The good news on this bike is that the big 18K service has just been completed and is documented ... but I have yet to read it. I'd like to know if the valves were out of spec or anything else they may have found during that major service.

I don't expect to get much back out of this Ducati when I sell it ... I'll try to keep it until 40K miles (I hope!!) But then, value will drop right off. Hopefully I'll have got enough fun out of it to justify the expense. Thoughts?

Selling price was Cheap considering. But I'm guessing I could have whittled the dealer down even more if I wanted to play hard ball. But they're my local guys ... and I'd like to see them stay open ... even though it's sort of a criminal enterprise with some very HIGH pressure type sales people whom I avoid .... and they lie, like many dealers.

Buyers need to understand that extended warranty isurance can be purchased anywhere in the US, so for those who are good shoppers there are deals to be had.

I would call Ducati NA in Cupertino, CA. Someone there in customer service should have a specific answer for you. I'm sure you're covered in Italy.
