2013 Hyperstrada 821 Loses Power and Intermittent Check Engine Light

Hey guys,
13' Strada with ~4,000 miles.
Intermittent problem I have had is that the bike will suddenly lose power and I have to give it full throttle just to get it to move. This sometimes may be accompanied by a check engine light.
Normal fix is to pull over, let it sit for a few minutes (usually just go to the gas station and fill it up), restart the bike and it is fine after that.

Anyone else had similar issues?

Anything else you notice when this happens? I had a short in the wiring harness where it enters the frame, when it would short out while riding the bike would lose power and the dash would flash some of the lights before showing a big triangle with an exclamation point. Restarting the bike would cure it for until it shorted again.

nope, nothing else happens. No other dash lights. Once I restart the bike, it is fine after that.

The only way to know for sure is scan it for codes and see what is logged. Unless you have a code scanner (Rexxer or similar) you may need to visit your dealer. I had similar problem recently, the bike was going in to limp mode, engine light would come on, restart would fix it most times. It was a code for the throttle ( I don't recall what the code was exactly)

I have Rexxer so was easy to scan. I reseated all wiring plugs behind the head light and general area, all has been good for a few weeks now.

Just did 700km on the weekend, no problems.

Do you have a tuner on the bike? If so then it could be as simple as the power wire that powers the tuner. It's located behind the right rearset usually and is subject to excessive stress. This is also where the neutral switch wiring is(which was my issue that I just fixed yesterday).

Another potential issue(and another electrical failure point that I had years ago) if the ground cluster under the tank on top of the air box(it's a little leg that sticks off with no connectors to it). This is very neat where N4teTheGreat's issue was. My ground cluster crimp wasn't tight and many of the grounds were barely touching/pulled out. I cut it back, stripped them all and soldered the cluster. It's just a bit of tape to expose and inspect. You could get away with sliding wires back in and recrimping if this is where you find the problem.

Years later I decided to replace my complete wiring harness, I checked these ground clusters on the new used harness and found them to not be compressed tight also. So I made sure they were all seated and crimped tighter. This might be where the electrical gremlins come from on these bikes if I'm being honest.

thanks, will check the connectors. No tune on the bike.

Sound exactly like what happened to mine. Was a loose battery terminal. See my thread:

I had this same problem with my ‘13 Hyperstrada. I replaced the throttle grip sensor assembly with the new ‘14 superseded part number & no longer have the lack of power issue.

hmmm. not sure it is the same issue. I didn't experience surging. there is throttle response, albeit lacking in power and sluggish. worth checking out

I can honestly say changing out the throttle grip sensor assembly with the 2014 part has completely eliminated my intermittent lack of power issues.

I used to have some issues. The engine cuts off, if I press the clutch the engine dies.
Turn off the keyswitch, turn on and it run again.

A couple weeks ago, on the road, the engine cuts off and I could make some tests. I keep the throttle opened, the engines run and fail, run and fail, and when I loose the throttle, it dies.

I was pissed. So I unpluged the sidestand sensor, make a jumper with a little metal wire and insulate it.

Until now, no more issues. I am waiting a long trip(maybe next week) to knock the hammer down.
So, if the sensor were the problem, I will try to clean it with eletronic contact cleaner and replug it. And then, test again.
With this two tests done, I hope I can solve the problem, buying a new sensor.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.
I used a rubber balloon and a tight-up to insulate from water

Had same issue with the side stand switch. Was caught in the rain on a trip and some weeks after, the bike would cut out and then restart with no problems. After a month or so, removed the insulation around the switch and water came out of the insulation, seems the insulation up the wire was full.

it was not the sidestand sensor.

I have had the issues again sometimes.
Last time I was ridding with a friend, he was on a Royal Enfield Classic 0km. So he asked for ride about 60-90km/h.

I put the Urban mode and we gone. Bike was stalling over and over again. I mean, the issues comes, I pull ober, turn off the key, turn it back on and back to the road. 200m ahead it comes again.

No power, CEL brights out, no throttle response.

It was when I ride between 3,000-5,000rpm.

Changed to the Touring mode and the issues persists. Tehn changed to the Sport mode, we ride over 100km at the same speed/RPM and no more issues.

Back to the city I changed back to Touring mode and the issues turns back.

Then, I was thinking about the APS, or the injection map, I don't know.

Today I ride over 100km, after config the power on the modes Urban and Touring. A changed it to HIGH on both modes and go to the road.
Nearly the 100km, already back in town, I break for a turn and the CEL light up, limp mode, throttle was not dead, but no power and the rev do not go above 4-5,000rpm.

So, until now, I just can say the Sport mode have not the stalling issue, but other two modes have.

Have you verified all recalls/ TSBs are current?
I have a '13 and there was an early limp mode/ power cut issue that was solved with a software update. Not quite what you're describing, but I'd certainly be sure the software is up to date.

Yeah... I did not verify if it is updated. Will see soon.

Oh, btw, what is TSBs?
