It seems that the question regarding low/standard height models pops up from time to time on various forums where new owners are puzzled as to what version they have of the 821/939 model. I'm one of those people and this is what i have found.

I only discovered I had the low version after buying the bike. I didn't receive an owners manual with the purchase. I was a little dismayed at first but I've reluctantly accepted the situation and since I haven't had the chance to try a regular seat height model, i really don't know what I'm missing.

The biggest issue I have had so far was determining the appropriate fork cartridge set to purchase. I ended up with an Andreani part number 105/D12.

There seems to be a lot of conjecture about the low version with some riders mentioning that even the dealers are confused or unaware of the model. I have read elsewhere that all 2016 models were the low version. I have a feeling that this isn't true. Part of the problem is trying to determine if you have one or not. My understanding is that the VIN will not help you. On my model, which was sold in Canada, it has a sticker on the tank mentioning that it is lowered.

But from the multiple languages on the sticker, it would appear to have been sold in numerous countries.

The owner's manual i downloaded only has a precautionary mention of it.

However in the same owners manual, it does indicate a 'lower seat' model in the chain tension section.

The sticker attached to my swing arm indicates the tension desired which is the second and most conclusive indicator that I have a low model. The sticker matches the spec in the owner's manual.

However, the service manual seems to identify that a low version Hyperstrada and a Thai model Hypermotard have the same specs. This I find somewhat confusing in that it implies that all Thai models are low versions and if so, why is it only specifically Thai models? What about other countries? Or maybe I'm easily confused and I'm overthinking things as I've had a very large coffee on an empty stomach. Anyone that can answer these questions, please feel free to do so.

It does however make me wonder what the Thai owners are buying for upgrades to their suspension.

The last indicator of having a low version is the seat which has a part number of 59521572A. But this is not wholly indicative that you have a low version, just a low seat.

Anyhoo, thanks for your time if you've read this far. Anyone wishing to share their experiences or input regarding the low version or can offer any insight to how widely they have been sold would be appreciated.

The owners manual for a 2016 model gives specs to help you determine which model you have. See below.

I've previously read that all 2015 & 2016 Hyperstradas were low models, but I suspect that would be restricted to the 821. I have a 939 which according to my dealer was built in August 2016, and it's not low. That's just one more piece to the jigsaw...

If memory serves me correct, you're the second Aussie i've heard of that has a 2016 standard height model.

More grist for the mill. According to parts listings for the 821/939 models, there are different side and center stands for the low and normal models. Here is the measurement for my 2016 low.

I took the measurement from the bolt to the bottom of the stand where the foot joins the leg of the stand.

I measured along the leg of the stand to the mounting bolt.

It appears that the measurement i have is 20.3 cm.

Hope this helps.

Let me add to your grist...

2016 939, presumably from my results the standard height version.
Did my best to measure from the same location on the foot of the stand and I have just over 22cm, I'd wager 22.3cm to make it 2cm longer than yours, this does vary a few mm based on precisely where on the foot of the stand I measure from, but certainly no more than 3mm variance.

I daresay we've found a definitive easy measurement to take to know if your hyper is standard or low version.
Measure the side stand length from centre of bolt to bottom of foot.
If you're in the ballpark of 20.3cm, Low version.
If you're in the ballpark of 22.3cm, Standard version.

Those figures make sense to me as the ground clearance difference between the low and standard version is nearly 2 cm.

I just measured the length of the side stand on my 2016 939 and it's around 223 mm, so it's definitely a standard version.

Even more grist for the mill!

I bought a workshop manual for the 2016 Hyperstrada, and it includes the following tables which provide different specs for models from different markets.Hyperstrada heights 1.PNG
Hyperstrada heights 2.PNG

I just had a look at the electronic version of the shop manual that i have for the 2016. I'm not sure what version of the manual i have. It could be North American, European,Asia....dunno. It does reference models from North American, Thailand, China and France. But here's the table that is in it and the only identification i could find for the manual which is the second attachment. The manual i have seems to cover both the HS and HM. Does your manual have some sort of identification like a heading and a revision date? On a slightly different note, tomorrow may be the last day to get the bike out as it's dropping to near freezing temperatures later in the week!🥶

Looks like mine is the E4 version too. Has 1,080 pages.
